Identification and value assistance, please.
Model 17 (sold to me as a "pre-17")
Serial # K 30556
Matching numbers on the wood grips.
6 inch barrel marked ".22 Long Rifle CTG"
I would like to know the production date and an approximate value.
I would like to advertise this gun accurately.
Any suggestions as to how to word the description would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Alan

You have a k 22 masterpiece that shipped in 1948. It is a 5 screw frame. Probably would bring around $800 to $900.

Serial # K 30556 would likely have shipped in mid-1948. It wouldn't become the Model 17 until 10 years later. It is a K-22 Masterpiece. Grips appear correct for that period. It has the so-called "4-line address" on the frame. value would depend on how and to whom it was sold, but looks to be easily in the $600-$700 range to me, assuming it does not have have its original box.

The diamond magna stocks are correctly numbered to the gun, which is a plus. Very Good condition. These are among the most accurate revolvers ever made by SW and an absolute pleasure to shoot. Prices vary by region.

Whoever sold it to you was correct. With that serial number, it is definitely not a Model 17.
Your pictures confirm its identity as a K-22 Masterpiece from 1948. It has the early barrel and rib configuration, the six grooves on the grip frame and correct numbered stocks. That's not to mention the early hammer style which was never used on any Model 17. Finally, there is that jig hole.
Personally, I would not let this one go for a dime less than $900, even without the gold box. It is a beauty and all original.
