Victory Revolvers for only $29.95! (But there's a catch ...)
Came across this ad in the October 1964 issue of "Guns" magazine. Am I correct in assuming that the "factory original S&W's in .38 special" are Victory models? Can't beat that price! Where's my #&%X! time machine when I need it??

That would be $234.61. Not exactly the same thing as $30 we know today. Doesn't seem like they really went up in value

Yep, comparatively speaking, the Lugers for $49.95 would be the better bet to stock up on.
I've noticed that back in those pre-internet days with no easy access to accurate pictures, nobody was particularly fussy about guns in ads and retail catalogs looking correct or as described. That picture clearly shows a 5" barrel and therefore BSR.

The M 57 for $119 or the HP for $73 looked pretty good too. As said, the Lugers were probably the best bargain.

The Guns Magazine archive website is a treasure trove with all of the issues going back to 1955 there in PDF. Lots of ads similar to this one to be found there. Those from Ye Old Hunter (Hunter's Lodge) are my favorites.

Wonder if that's really a Highway Patrolman pictured. Funny how it has Target stocks and probably hammer and trigger too.
Love looking at those old ads.

As low as that seems it really wasn't that good a price in 1964. New M&Ps sold at retail for something like $68, and a used M&P would typically sell for 1/2 to 3/4 retail or around $34-50 +/-.

I think around 1968, I bought a new M10 snubby for around $70. But I was making only about $10K/year (before taxes) back then, and my wife was making about half that as a nurse. I didn't keep it long, wish I had. The Victory revolvers were selling for about half that at the time.

Also interesting here is the ammo cost-ratios. In the ad for the Victory, a $3 box of 38 ammo is right at 10% of the cost of the pistol. If that ratio held up today, that would be (roughly) a $50-90 box of ammo !!
Also, the 9mm ammo is $2 per 50 (in $4 100-rd boxes), which means it's right at 33% less than 38, which is almost exactly the ratio we have today ( cheap 9mm at Walmart is $10, the 38 is $15).

You don't have to go that far back for what would be bargains today. I have a 1982 Shotgun News with lots of advertisements for new Colt Pythons for $350 or so.
