I have two-inch M&P S868055, which shipped in January 1947. I'd think the odds favor a ship date for your gun within a couple of months of that on either side. As always, getting a specific date would necessitate a research letter; S&W did not ship in serial number order.

Let's see some pics, but I'm with DC on the date range.
I own an S 937XXX and an S 955XXX that shipped in July and November of 1947 respectively so it looks like they were shipping out around 10,000 a month.
Based on that I would guestimate yours as maybe January of 1947 or December of 1946.

The pre-war/transitional (immediate post WWII) long action hammer with the S prefix is a plus. I'll bet it is smooth. Nice one!
I show a slew of 2" examples in the S867xxx and S868xxx range. One of them is David's gun, mentioned above. Most of them shipped in January and February of 1947, but I do show a couple fliers. One shipped in August, 1947, and the other in September of that same year. So January or February is a good guess for S867731, but it clearly could have shipped later. So much depended on demand and the 4" and 5" guns seem to have been outselling the 2" examples (the 6" as well) by quite a large margin.
The nearest number in my personal collection is one with a 4" barrel, serial number S861363. It shipped in December, 1946.
