Post War Transitional .38/44 HD
Found this listed as .38 Special Smith and Wesson. It looked like a HD so I bid and won.It looks fantastic, good lockup, and timing is good. Grips are in great shape. Blueing has honest wear with no blemishes or rust. It looks to be a wartime build Serial # S684XX

Early post war production. The 'S' indicates the hammer block safety that was first implimented on Victory models during the war.
For under 600 bucks, you stole that gun.

That's what I thought. There was no mention of HD in the description but I thought it might be. I had recently been reading about HD .38-44s here.

You'll also see those referred to as post war "transitionals", due to the long action hammer. Very desirable guns. You probably got it for 40 - 50% less than they commonly sell for.
Are the stocks numbered same as the gun?

Yes they are. I told the dealer who did the transfer that the grips were worth $200. It was the dealer who pulled his Smith and Wesson book out and thought the serial # was wartime.

A number of 5" Heavy Duties in the S684XX range were shipped to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in May of 1948. If you will send me a PM or email with the full serial number I will look it up and see if we can tell you more about it's history.

I learned the gun was part of the shipment to Missouri Highway Patrol thanks to linde. I was shocked because this gun didn't appear to be a duty weapon. But I was told they were all traded just a few years later. Plus I think the Trooper must have used a full flap holster.
