M1905 Nicest One I've Found
Going through the inventory today. Picked up this one three years ago for $350, and didn't really appreciate it. Now that I have a pile of these pre-war Smiths, this one stands out. Not perfect but 95% pretty easy. AR valued nice ones like this at around $1200 year before last. I can see why now. They are not out there. Vanished years ago. I still find nice ones. Just not in this condition. Gun is almost unfired and like new except for a few dings. Vintage grips like these dried up before the guns. A real high-end collector grade gun. Shipped around 1936-1938 with a SN 682XXX. . .one of the later ones.

I just bought one a couple weeks ago. Mine was # 683938 but had no XXX's. Virtually unfired I paid $600 for it OTD. It was sent to the Sacramento PD in 1940. Only one gun in the shipment. Big Larry

That is a beauty. Here is my 4th change from around 1916. It is also in amazing condition. All original. No frame markings. No intent to hi-jack the thread. I just know how you all like pictures.

That's too funny! All mine have the XXX's. The reason for that is to keep somebody from claiming one of my guns belongs to him. I've seen it happen. At a LGS a SN claim was made on a Luger he bought. Lugers do repeat SN's with the exception of the lower-case letter that appears here and there all over the gun. The gun was confiscated and held for 6 months before it was returned to the LGS. While it is unlikely that this would happen. . .it actually does.

I actually have a M94 Winchester with a "X" after the serial number. In this case it is a factory mark for a duplicate serial number. I have never had a problem giving complete numbers. Thanks, Big Larry

I am certainly no photographer. The revolver is much better in person. Funny thing. They only ordered one of these. No PD markings. Big Larry

Your picture is fine! Looks like a great gun to me. I guess since there are no PD marking, someone ordered a personal gun and just had it shipped to their place of work. To bad it wasn't marked!

Here's my 1905 3rd from 1911. These deep, gold medallion type stocks are my favorite S&W style. These still have "mint luster" on them. There is about half a cylinder ring and I think it has been fired.

The other nicest one I've picked up in the past 3 years. . .a 1927 that was refinished at the factory in 1947. Satin finish due to the date it was redone. Paid the same for this one as the other. The guy who redid all these grips died some years ago. Left his grip collection to his best friend who then passed a few years back. His widow took the collection to a LGS for an evaluation where they stole several pairs. She put the ones she got back on EBAY with very bad pictures in the $75 - $90 price range. Nobody would buy them because of the pictures, but I did. Got the K Frame set with examples from the teens, 1920's, and the 1930's. After I let it be known on this Forum, the rest sold out quickly. The guy was a real master woodworker.

Those target sights do tend to mess the gun up a bit. Wish I had a box for my 1910 target, but that's not likely to happen.

I have a thing for old nice condition Smith revolvers. Here's one of mine that I'd rate at almost 100% - just as it came from the factory.

When did S&W move the logo over to the cylinder release side and then back again? Anecdotally it seems like about 1920, and then back just prior or during WWII.

When I quoted your post, your picture info showed up, but it does not show in your post. That is why I think there is a formatting problem. I am not smart enough to re-format what I see to make it post. Maybe another member can or make a suggestion.

I just picked this one up last month. I'm bringing it to the Symposium next month for show & tell.
It is a very special .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 Forth Change.

I guess I'll dig some more out. First gun is 38M&P 2" from 1933.Next, 38 M&P target shipped 1927. 38 M&P nickel from 1905. 32-20 target from 1917,finally a 38 M&P fixed sight from 1926.

Holy Moly, I really like the 38 M&P 2" from 1933! Are the grips ivory and, if not, what are they? Also, do you know who carved the S&W Logo in them?

A couple more "geezer guns" for the collective post:
sn's 2501xx (blue 5") and 2537xx (nickel 6"), probably from around 1916.
They have been shot a bit, but were well cared for and preserved.

I have to say here - RKmesa took the time to help me out of my photo problem. Not only took the time, but got me off my butt to figure it out after I had given up on it.
RKmesa, Hondo44 and others.....Hondo44 has helped me through several goofy, self-inflicted problems and all he ever says is "if I can help you further, please let me know". These are the kinds of folks we can be proud to say make up this website and make us proud to be members. These beautiful 1905's here, they don't come along everyday, and "people" like these don't come along everyday either!

This is why it is important to letter your guns. This is a plain .38 M&P. Other than it is unfired and in it's original box. It is nothing special. In it's 90 years in existence, no one bothered to letter it. I did. A check of factory records show it shipped on April 1, 1927 to Frank Wesson, Treasurer, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, MA.
