Default re Nickel Mod 10 5 screw ?

Friend has a 4 inch nickel mod 10 victory SN 909734.5screw. Not sure of the vintage. Need help determining what he has for sure. Grip has a place for a stud that has a plug. Trigger and hammer have not been nickelled. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Gun is marked 38 special.

Number of issues here.

1. Photo would help
2. Model 10's weren't marked as such until the late 1950's
3. If a Victory it would have a "V" prefix before the digits.
4. SV prefix started at SV769001 with the "slide action hammer block" design change

If the serial number is 909734 it is most likely a British Service Revolver. I show a s/n 9073xx shipping 2/42 and s/n 9105xx shipping 1/42.

The closest I have to your s/n is s/n 8776xx. It shipped 12/41.

Most important, check the caliber stamped on the barrel. British Victorys are .38 S&W CTG, original 4” US versions have SPECIAL added. So if the marked .38 Special you mention is the factory rollmark on the barrel, it is an original 4” pre-Victory M&P.

These were not factory nickeled anymore at that time in 1942, so the plating is definitely a refinish.

Didn't S&W use up frames that were left over from Victory revolver production to make early post war revolvers could explain the plugged hole. Need pictures, and serial number to sort it out.

As others have said:
It is NOT a Model 10.
That serial number probably should start with an 'S', making it from the early post-war years.
It 'might' have been plated from the factory, but only pictures will tell the story.

If the OP left out the S prefix, that would be a theoretical possibility. However, in that case the serial is a hundred thousand or so too high for a lanyard plug, so it would have to have been special-ordered with one in 1947 and then have the lanyard removed, and nickeled over the plug, all a bit of a stretch.

A photo of the butt would indeed clarify all that.
