I went to the gun show this weekend and picked up this prewar 38/44.It was sent back to the factory in 8/81 for a reblue and someone did a Fitz job on the trigger guard and did a fantastic action job on it, the action is as smooth as butter. It also features a set of Catalin grips. It dates to 1938.

Thanks quinn! Yea those Fits guns don't come up to often,This was the first one I have seen in a long time and I have been looking. The Catalin grips are definitely old ones but I don't know how old for sure.

About 15 years ago I went into my LGS to pick up a revolver I ordered, after the paperwork he shows my a s&w 38/44. I had no clue what I was looking at. I wish I did. I passed on it.

I do find that most of my older s&w revolvers have smoother actions. It doesn’t appear from use. I’m thinking that s&w had the old world craftsmanship back then. Who took pride in there work.

I really don't think they are all that dangerous the Texas Rangers carried them all the time back in the day. Nearly all of Lone Wolf Gonzaullas guns had cutaway trigger guards even his 1911's and many other Rangers as well. Personally I wouldn't change a thing about this old gun especially since I will only be using the gun for house and range use .

rburg , a great comment with a lot of truth to it. I often wonder how many of the people saying that the Fitz triggers are dangerous actually have any experience with them. I have several and while I do not carry them, it is more for liability than worry about how dangerous they are. In any case , to each his own. All my very best, Joe.

I'd love to see that HD, but it pretty much disappears on that black rug. Perhaps you'd consider a series of detail shots against a lighter-colored background ?

I'm not sure yet if I like the trigger guard, or lack of, I say to each his own as long as it's safe in your hands. As far as the color, I say every Steeler fan should want those grips! Very beautiful color scheme! Even though it's actually very nice deep blue, from 5 ft. away it says Go Steelers! (Seriously, that is a very nice revolver; looks very comfortable to shoot. Nice purchase.) Jeff T., PGH PA

There were a lot of guns manufactured without trigger guards, including many S&W models. Never heard anyone complain about how "dangerous" they were. To me, its like saying hand ejectors are dangerous because they have no safety button.

I can see both sides actually of tne dangerous argument . If a person is serious like for instance an old time Texas ranger or some of the back county sherrifs where if there was trouble they generaly were there only back up every little edge counted .Like Mr Jordan wrote there are no second place winners ,these guns were for the serious man who had a serious job and the criminal back then would kill a law man in a second .For the rest of us me included just leave the trigger guard on .

Yes, a shame someone hacked the trigger guard. While some think a Fitzed revolver is cool, all I see is an accident waiting to happen.

I don't think they're particularly dangerous, but they're ugly as sin. I just don't see the purpose, but it's not mine. If you're happy, I'm happy, but I'm happier that my .38/44 trigger guard is all there . . .
