Folks,
I need a bit of help narrowing down a revolver that was my grandads:

S&W 32 revolver

Type: Hand Ejector
Serial Number: B 20785 (the b only appears on the extractor shroud.)

Cartridge / Caliber: .32 Long CTG
Barrel Length: 4 1/4
Sights: Fixed

It is a five screw model
It has a strain screw at the bottom of the front grip strap.

I have the Standard Book of S&W and have searched the .32 section and can not find this one.

It looks a lot like a regulation police and generally fits the description of the Model 1903 HE 2nd model. (1st model does not have locking lug or thumb piece and this one does)
Round butt
5 screw
4 ¼ barrel
Round blade front sight forged to barrel
Locking lug
Pinned barrel
Cylinder stop on the bottom
S&W logo on the side plate (this is the only model I found in the book with the logo on the plate)

On the barrel:

SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA
PAT’D APR 9 1889 MAR 27 1894 MAY 21 1895
AUG 4 1896 DEC 22 1896 OCT 4 1898 OCT 8
1901 DEC 17 1901 SEPT 2 1902 JULY 7 1903

32 LONG CTG

Grips don’t seem to match but were probably replaced. They don’t look like they fit (there is a space at the top).

The book says serial nos. stop at 19425 and this one’s serial no. is 20785.

Serial number fits 1st change but there is no ’small S&W monogram” that I can see on the left side and it has Pat’d dates that aren’t mentioned in any of the .32s (APR 9 1889 and July 7 1903.

Any ideas?

You pretty much have it, you just need to read on in the catalog. Yours is a .32 Hand Ejector Second Model (Model of 1903 - 1st Change). The no-change goes to 19425.

I can't explain the logo. Hondo44 is our expert on the small-frame guns; maybe he has an idea.

The B with the barrel serial means it was originally blued. I'm assuming you don't mean "extractor shroud" literally.

PS: On second thought, on which side of the barrel is the caliber stamping? (These things always work better if you just attach a few photos :))

That revolver would have shipped around 1905 and should have a logo on the sideplate, which was later changed to the left side.

Patent dates are correct for your model, ending in the July 7, 1903 date.

Approximate years for logo changes:
Large logo on right side prior to - 1916
No-Logo" guns, all models - -1916 to 1919
Small logo on left side started - 1919 - 1936

I checked the SCSW, and for the First change it indeed says "small S&W monogramm" on the left. The catalog doesn't mention the location of the logo for the other changes.

Now my 1903 No Change #6721 has the large logo on the sideplate (see attached), and a Fifth Change I have has the small logo also on the sideplate. But I've found photos of First Changes that indeed show the small logo below the cylinder latch. So things changed. It's entirely possible, given that your gun was a very early First Change, it still got the previous style logo.

PS: Gary posted while I typed :)

The logo is not a good indicator of the model, the location does not always follow the changes and can overlap with the next change as they used up older parts.

Absalom has correctly ID'd the model and vintage by the serial #.

Regulation Police models were not introduced until 1917 and have a rebated back strap on a rd butt grip frame, with extended sq butt grips/stocks.
