Eye candy for the help
Thanks for the help on the hand ejector 1915 that ended up being a 1905. Grabbed this from the same buddy a few weeks ago. Don't think it's ever been fired maybe just cocked some. Debating rather or not to shoot it and going back and forth but right now thinking it needs to go boom. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Forum.
That's why S&W built it; it needs to be shot. I have owned three Highway Patrolmen. They all shot well.

I'm "lucky" in that I don't think I'll ever have the difficult decision of having an unfired classic gun and whether I'll shoot it or not.
I'd hate to have a gun and not shoot it. But I'd also hate to have a pristine unfired machine and "soil" it. I could MAYBE bring myself to fire it once or twice or a whole cylinder, just for testing / validation / knowing what it is like, but at the same time why bother.
Of course if I was lucky enough to be able to have a pristine, unfired classic I'd probably pretty easily have a bunch of other shooter guns so I'd leave it unshot / as a safe queen / trophy gun.
Good luck, and nice gun!

Eye candy for the help
RKmesa has a theory on this dilemma; you buy one example as a pristine non-shooter safe queen (like your beautiful Highway Patrolman!) and one example as a shooter. Kind of like this:
Shooter
Non-shooter safe queen
Richard can show you many more examples if he sees this thread.

Beautiful HP (looks to be a relatively early 28-2)!!! That HP is your gun and you can do whatever you would like to do. I am sure that you would have a great time shooting it. But if it were mine, as Terry said, I would find a shooter grade one and try and keep that beauty in the mint condition it is in. Here are a couple of my 4" Highway Patrolman revolvers:
"Shooter" (beautiful gun with lots of well earned wear):
"Safe Queen" (keep pristine and relatively new-in-the-box):
Honestly, sometimes I think collecting shooter grade and collector grade guns of the models I love is just my internal excuse to buy more guns...

I have become more of a collector than a shooter so my opinion may be jaded. If however I was mostly a shooter, I would still probably not shoot a gun if it were NIB merely to be able to pass it along to a future collector. There are plenty of shooter grade guns out there and you could probably sell that package to a purist collector and take the money and find a shooter for less and have money left over for ammo.
In that way, both you and a purist collector are happy and the world keeps spinning.

I don't believe in safe queens. I shoot every gun I own.
Granted, there are a few that don't get shot very often, but they do get shot.

Can't afford "safe queens" more power to you guys that can....they are history and someone needs to preserve the art.
Personally I think guns get better looking the more you shoot them

I'm a shooter and accumulator........ so I've accumulated a lot of pairs of Models I like to shoot/carry.
One for shooting and one for looking (and a backup if ever needed)

When ever I see a thread like this I long for the days when you could just walk into a gun store and buy one of those off the shelf. The blue boxes with that deep blued steel and impeccable quality, fit and finish revolver inside. No internal locks or canted barrels, gritty triggers or being out of time from the factory. It doesn't seem that long ago maybe the 70's early 80's. I do miss those days.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I see a faint turn line. No reason not to shoot it with due care and cleaning. I'm sure there are turn-line-free examples out there.

Would any of you buy a 53 Corvette or a 68 XKE or a 63 Galaxie 427 and NOT drive it?
I might not take it to WalMart, but don't be blockin my driveway......
