Default Model 36 Date

I have a Smith and Wesson model 36 (no dash) with a serial number J432933. Can anyone tell me the year it was manufactured? And what it is worth? It is in excellent shape! TIA

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Happy to see you started your own thread. Thank you.

S&W doesn't track "manufacturing" dates, only the dates they shipped guns from the factory, and they didn't ship them in serial number order so the only way to know for sure is to get a factory letter.

Based on your serial number I'd guess yours shipped sometime around the spring of '76.

Really tough to estimate value with just one photo. I see them going anywhere between $300 and $500. The aftermarket grips don't help the estimate. Most folks here are looking for serial number matching factory grips (only the right grip panel is stamped with the serial number).

Hope this helps.

Bob

Love the Chiefs Special. Great snubby. Mine is a floating "J" from the mid 70's. Shipped 3/74.

serial number J432933:

1976-1977 production = J370001 - J610000

Values vary. You might get on GunBroker and see what similar ones have actually sold for (not minimum starting bids) at recent sales. I'd guess around $400. I don't follow sale price trends on these as I have no interest in them.
