I just won this one yesterday. Can't wait to get it in my hands.
I have no proof, but by the quality of what I suspect is a refinish, I'm thinking it might have gone back to the factory for the pre-war target rear sight.
The front sight looks like a King's (but it might be a Micro, can't tell from the pics) and it could have been done there, too.
If I find a rework date, this one might be worth a Historical Foundation research.
The headspace looks like it's still in .455.
Yes, those are pre-war N frame magnas in excellent+ condition. They're worth about 80% or more of hammer price. :-)
Deducting the value of the stocks leaves another fun pre-war target shooter for about 2 bills delivered. I have a near-twin converted .45LC with a post-war factory target sight plus a customized 1917 with 8" heavy barrel and post-war rear sight. Both of those were also priced too low to pass up.

Really well done and very nice shape. profile is very Colt like with that front sight. Maybe owned in Canada where the 455 is more popular?

Are you sure the stocks aren't reproductions?

I was with you up to until the last $40 on that one! Congratulations!

Chris,

That's a spectacular 455 2nd Model.

Looks like it may have started life as a commercially shipped example that never made it to the Brits or WWI.

Without knowing much about it, I'll make a guess it went back to the factory after 1935 and before WWII, when it got the new replacement Magnas, sights and re-blue (or maybe not even reblued). Will be interesting when you get it to see if it has a star on the butt and a rework date.

In the meantime, do you have a link to the completed auction for your 455?

Congrats!!!

#58252 is clearly Brit contract 2nd Model, the 3rd type Brit Contract model.

The auction states "British Proof Stamps" but I don't see a single stamp.

Most likely one of 1105 2nd Models released for commercial sales in the US, shipped Dec 1917 to Shapleigh Hardware in St. Louis [S&W, N&J pg. 216].

With your data base, you might know the serial range (if there is one). Might it be one of those Canadians with the butt mark "Crown 30" only? There're usually in exceptional condition.

Really, a very special S&W!
Art Doc made an interesting observation about possible Canadian use.
My first Bullseye CF revolver was a well worn 2nd model HE .455 that I owned in Canada. It was a bit of a reloading effort, but the results were great.
The absence of adjustable sights was a bit of a drag, though.

This .455 would have been fantastic to have.
Yes, trips to gun shows would often help procure old CIL Dominion .455 brass. And, it was not too hard finding loaded ammo. Once (only once) I found a couple boxes of NOS 265 gr HBRN bullets made by CIL, along with a box of unfired Dominion brass.
Imagine my pleasant surprise to find my modified 45 Colt brass and cast SWCs were the most accurate (and most easily obtained) option!

Gun shows would often have 1st and 2nd model HEs, but with the possible exception of a target model Webley & Scott 455 with 22 single shot conversion unit, I never saw anything as nice as the 455 in the OP!

Jim

No Crown 30 stamped on it's butt. These are the other examples commercially shipped 12/1917 to Shapleigh Hardware in my data base:

66860
67691
68995
69234

As you can see, the numbers of the 1105 are all spread out as usual.

The Canadian shipped guns I show are all in the 70000 range.
