Default Triple lock questions

So... I recently stumbled across one of these gems... and was curious about condition vs valuation.

Dont have serial number, so year of manufacture is unknown. Hopefully the pic shows up.

Seller is asking $4k

Ítem description as follows:

Rare Smith & Wesson Triple lock Hand Ejector 6 1/2" in 44 S&W Special. This was the first model with side swing cylinder in the hand ejector series. 80% original blue with freckling. All original accept for genuine stag horn grips.

Price seems a little steep in that condition.

What he said! Just my own WAG, but I’d put a more realistic price at not much more than half of that. YMMV, though.

From the photo it is really hard to figure out the actual condition. If the finish is original and not doctored with cold blue, I'd also guess about half what the seller is asking. JMHO

Yes they are gems. With just the left side photo it's hard to tell but a re-blue will greatly affect the price. Also non original stocks knock it down another notch or two. And the fixed sight guns are not valued as high as the target sighted models so with those three things in mind I would be thinking $1800 - $2200 would be all the money.

The finish looks dull, and there is a lack of case colouring evident in the hammer and trigger, which suggests significant use. I suspect a reblue. If not, the condition is not anywhere near 80%. The barrel appears more brown than blue. And, as others have already stated, the original pre war N frame stocks are missing. Given these observations, I think $1000 could very well be a stretch for this one.

And as an alternative to the price is too high crowd (many/all of whom already have theirs), keep asking yourself where you're going to find another one---and how long are you willing to wait----little things like that. And ask yourself about money----you'll be getting some more of that tomorrow, right? Me too.

Trust me. You won't have to wait too terribly long to find one a whole lot nicer than this one for a whole lot less!

Thanks for the replies folks. Yeah... I was thinking more along the lines of $25-$2800.

They're a decent shop... but usually high on the more rare and unique items. Especially if consignment.

I might go and take a better look at it in person, and see how tight it is... and what the true general condition is.

They can get a bit creative with their descriptions... so the "80% original blue" could mean that the other 20% is re-blued... or, it could be an actual 80% gun.

mrcvs,

Sounds like you may be "in the know" about something I'd like to know.

Just keep looking. If you have $4k to spend you can get a really mint one. Don't get antsy to get the first one that pops up.

BTDT, and am glad I waited a while.

E-mail me through the forum if you want to know more. More than willing to help and assist.

I've collected several of these over the years, none of which I have paid a crazy price for.
