Turns out what what listed and sold as a Highway Patrolman (that I bid on for Coke grips) is actually a pre-war Non-registered Magnum frame and cylinder with a Highway Patrolman barrel and ejector rod installed. It also has a post-war long action hammer with safety cut.

SN 60147 with checkered top strap and matching King's checkered rear sight.
Best I can do for now is probably put a Model 27 barrel on it to match the polish and top checkering.
The Cokes turned out to be pretty good with a small chip I can fix.

If my deal works out for an early 27 barrel, I have an offset spur RM hammer and correct Magna's ready to install. It will be a huge improvement.
I'll try to take some real pics tomorrow.

Original post:
Just what I needed. Another N frame. But I couldn't resist bidding on it for the Coke Bottle grips (Hammer price was $600 before 15% premium and shipping). Please excuse the poor pic from the auction house.
It's a good to vg condition pre-Model 28 Highway Patrolman 5-screw. Shows use and unfortunately it looks like someone shaved the front sight down a bit. I probably have a correct sight ramp to fix that. Plus I have several spare sets of N diamond magna stocks to replace the Cokes which will be 're-assigned' somewhere else. Another N frame holster can always be put to good use, too.

Added:
On closer examination of the very poor pics, it's an earlier gun with a HP barrel installed. I just noticed the one-line address. Only time will tell what it turns out to be. Could be a pre-war or a transitional. The long action hammer didn't stick out to me like it should have. I was distracted by the stocks. :-(

So it might turn out to be interesting or a dud. At least the stocks should be worth more than half my costs. Maybe the frame will be a good candidate for some .44 Spl parts I've got in the drawer. Another fun project on the horizon.HP.jpg

I was thinking the rear sight might be an aftermarket replacement. It looks like some I have in my stash. No worries. I have a couple correct Model 28 rear sights as well.

1 line frame address? Not sure what you have there, but I don't think that barrel and frame started out life together. Might be a pre-war or transition frame. Do you know what serial number is on the butt?

I noticed this and added to the original description. No, the SN wasn't listed. Zero info and poor pics. I was distracted by the stocks and the Highway Patrolman barrel pic. Gotta wait to see what it is until they ship it to me.
In my defense, I was on my laptop at work, so pics were even worse than on a full size screen.

The tag says serial number is 45786. Nice score just for the grips. I see the hammer stud is in the white and actually looks like a pre war frame. Maybe outdoorsman once?? Keep us updated on the details when it comes.

I don't think you have anything to be defensive about. I am willing to bet you will be very happy with it when it arrives.

Agreed. Looking closer, the rear sight is a King and the hammer almost looks like it could be a King Cockeyed hammer. Not sure if it's a Registered Magnum frame though because I can't tell if the top strap is checkered. Could be an OD or other pre-war N frame.

The ejector rod doesn't look "barrel-ish" to me, but hard to tell from the left-side photo. However, my guess is that it's got an HP cylinder & ejector rather than a pre-war OD or RM cylinder/ejector. Hopefully we'll get to see it. -S2

With that serial number and no "REG ___" in the yoke - it's probably a pre-war Outdoorsman Frame, rebarreled with a HP Barrel, and probably a post war cylinder...

Very cool gun, regardless...

We'd love some more photos of the tell tale parts - top of frame, inside the yoke, close up of the hammer (side and top), rear of the cylinder (is the cylinder numbered to the frame, is it recessed?)...

Thanks for sharing,

The suspense is agonizing! It's amazing how a combination of valuable but mismatched parts turn up together like this.
