That was originally made for the British in .455 and then rechambered to .45 Colt.

Welcome to the Forum. You have one of thousands of S&W 455 Mark II Hand Ejector, 2nd Model revolvers that came back from WWI to be re-chambered in 45 Colt and 45 ACP since 455 ammo was not commonly available here in the US. There were about 70,000 of these 2nd Model guns made mostly for the British to use in WWI and their official ammunition was a short "man-stopper" design in .455 caliber. I think I can see the second "5" and the gunsmith would have added the "LC".

It appears to have escaped British commercial proofing; it just shows the military proof and Enfield acceptance.
Do I remember correctly that there has been discussion of a double-struck butt serial around here before?

Welcome to the Forum.
What serial number is stamped under the barrel? If you see a "B", that is not part of the SN. It merely denotes that the revolver shipped with a blue finish.

Looks like the serial numbers were made using different stamps (different fonts.) The front sight has been modified.

I have a 52908 with double serial numbers on the butt as well. I cannot remember if my revolver has been discussed on this Forum or not, but if so, do not recall an answer?? This one was modified to shoot 45ACP w/ moon clips but the caliber marking was not changed from original??

Yep, same pattern, crossed out on the left and then the same number stamped on the right.
I don’t remember an answer either. But it looks too uneven and “hand-made” to be factory. Legibility can’t be the issue, only some oddball regulation somewhere that said serials have to be on the other side. Bureaucracy gone nuts? Wouldn’t be the only time
