Default Bubba's 3.5" 1950 target.45

I should have probably left this one were I found it, but I have a soft spot for short barreled N frames. There is a part of me that want to fix some if it's issues, but I know it is not monetarily wise. The.45 is mechanically tight. The action is a little on the heavy side, but smooth. The front sight could have been done much better. When I get a chance to go to the range, I will report back.

We suffer from the same affliction...My 3 3/4" bumper chromed .38-44 is about as ugly as homemade sin, but it has a permanent home in my EDC rotation...Shown here wearing its stylish Ken Driskill moose antlers which cost me more than the gun when I rescued it......Ben

Either one of those would easily aerate a ne’er-do-well’s gizzard. If I was the ne’er-do-well facing the barrel, I would remember right quick I had business elsewhere!!!

This 3 1/2 inch 1950 Target from Joe Kent started out as a severely mangled mess.
Bowen completed it just before he stopped working on S&W revolvers.

Edit for clarity: the revolver belongs to Joe Kent. I am merely the photographer. (And that's the best pistol picture I've ever taken.)

I've got the same affliction to this 25-2 that started with a 6 1/2" tube. What a fantastic shooter it is!

Looks like the front sight might have been cold blued at one time.

Ben, SG-688, and Tom, those are three awesome short barreled N frames!

Tom Turner, that is a fantastic photo. I love the bark on your stocks.

Ben, I agree with Spin 132, she is not as ugly as you made her out to be. I have a set of elk stags that I may have to give a tryout on this one. They look great on yours.

SG-688, I am truly green with envy of your Bowen 1950. I do not know if it would be worth the cost associated to start with this one. The side plate gap and finish work needed, would probably break me.

Stansdds and Ed, I will get better photos of the front sight when I get home later today. It looks to have been cold blue to me also. Just patchy wear.

Not a 45, here’s my latest 3.5”. Fortunately, Bubba didn’t touch the gun, but it appears he filled out the price tag. Lucky me!
I refer to her as my, “Friday Night Special.” : D

No kidding. I definitely wasn’t going to leave it behind for anything less than $1500; I probably would have gone $1900. The whole bird in the hand thing.

Well now there's Bubba and then there's BUBBA. I don't think this one looks too bad. I would have been tempted.

Ditto. If it shoots to POA, then a proper bluing on that front sight and it would be just fine & dandy IMO...

A friend had a 70 year old revolver with the same problem. After it was well oiled by me, the action was slicker than snot on a wet sidewalk.

Results on a target is the proof in the pudding.

I’d love to find a shortened N frame for a song. Homemade sin is my favorite by the way.

A gold bead front sight and a round butt grip would really make the package. My 4" 66 has both and I really like it. It's the revolver I use most for my LEOSA qualification.

Back in my rookie days (early 70's) an investigator friend of mine, who was also a very good machinist, took a S&W 1917, cut the barrel to 3 1/2". rounded the butt, replaced the front sight, slicked up the internals, had it nickeled, and added stags. Not only did he make a beautiful revolver, it shot very well and he carried it on duty for several years, including one shooting incident where he came in first. The only reason he quit carrying it was he was issued department mandated model 66's. Would I do that to a 1917 now? No. But, back then there were still plenty of them around and they had little collector interest. He was actually a little ahead on speed loading as he carried a few extra six round loads. I shot the gun and at 25 yards it was very effective.

M conrad 0311,
Thanks for posting the extra pics in post #23.
I appreciate the details of the front sight installation.
If someone had described screwing on the front sight base with a flat head screw, I would've cringed. But, it looks like whoever did the work knew how to measure straight lines!

I'd have had a tough time cutting the barrel that short, though. Seeing the "Smith & Wesson" rollmark off-center on the barrel throws off my eye.

But, it does have character!

The front sight could have been done much better. When I get a chance to go to the range, I will report back.
Let me know if you decide to part with it!
