I just noticed this on a 4 Screw Highway Patrolman the other day when opening the cylinder. There are no model 28 markings, so it looks like a 5 screw gun. The serial number is S 176XXX. Did they just forget to stamp Model 28 in that area?

That's sweet.

Unfortunately both of my HIGHWAY PATROLMAN examples are much later N-prefixed serial numbered examples with the model 28-2 markings.

Did the very earliest of HIGHWAY PATROLMAN examples get diamond magnas or were they all typically delivered with the later style non-diamond magnas? (If factory delivered with magna style stocks that is.)

Those grips on my gun there are not what it came with. When I bought that gun it had rubber grips on it and all I had laying around were those that are on it now. They should be diamond center magna grips, I think.:)

My 28 no dash is from 1960. It came to me with "rubbers" on it. Pictures of diamond magnas, and diamond targets. My Dad bought the N targets in the 60's.I Normally shoot with target stocks. I recently came close to buying a 4" 28. A few issues I did not like. Enjoy your 28! Bob

Beside the 28-1, I think the 4 screw non-model marked Highway Patrolman is encountered less than all others. Except maybe the 28-3 that I foolishly sold and never have seen another.

So, you have me scratching my head over this question . . .

Note the part of your question that I highlighted in bold type. As you point out, Magna stocks lacking the diamond are LATER. The Highway Patrolman was introduced in 1954 and became the Model 28 in 1958. Elimination of the diamond on the stocks was mandated in 1966. Non-diamond stocks are, by definition, later, as you yourself stated. How in the world could they be factory shipped for a dozen years before they were made?

In other words, you have answered your own question. You should start listening to yourself! You might find out that you are right more often than you think you are. :D

On the other point you raised parenthetically, Magna stocks were standard equipment on the HP. Target stocks were an extra cost option. Therefore, far more left the factory with Magnas than with targets. I've owned about 10 of them over the years, and none of them (4" or 6") left Springfield with target stocks.

For some reason I was incorrectly thinking the factory stopped delivering the N-Frames with diamond magna stocks much earlier in the 1950's.

Oh. Now I understand your question. Thanks.

But, no. It was clear into the BP era, which began in 1965.

I was a little hasty with the date in my previous post. For N frame Magna stocks, the order was issued in October, 1965. For K frame Magna stocks, it was January, 1966.

For K and N frame target stocks, the directive was issued on December 27, 1967. According to our resident expert, the supply of N frame target stocks with the diamond lasted until early in 1969, when the last of them left Springfield. That would have corresponded pretty closely to the end of the S prefix serial numbers. Which is interesting in itself.

Regards.

D Brown, I have a M28-0 four screw with serial number S214XXX also, I see yours has the lazy ampersand on the barrel, mine has a normal "&", the SCSW says mine was made somewhere around 1961

On a bit of a sour note, the markings on the barrel seem really close to the muzzle end, making me think the barrel was originally 6 inches.

Wow, good catch.

Has there ever been an instance where it was confirmed that factory cut down an existing longer barrel for a special or rush order, thus having an off centered barrel marking?

A siderail for certain, but I'm curious none the less.
