Default Interesting 1905

I think this is a model 1905,4th change, #84534 that has what I think are police evidence markings in 4 places on it. That number is W689411CA and is electro-penciled on both side of the grip frames , the trigger and the face of the cylinder...TWICE! The first try was illegible so he did it again! On the inside of the grips are a couple of pieces of plastic label machine tape with SB over 1029 W9TH and there is a place on one grip where it appears there was an other piece of label that might have read DENEI_E. And of course the left grip has 6 notches cut into it. they could mean "holds 6 rounds" or anything else you can imagine.

I'm going to guess that the engraved number is somebody's California driver license number and put there for identification if lost or stolen.

I have a 22/32 HFT with the DL scratched into the following locations:

1) On the frame under the grips on the right side
2) On the frame under the grips on the left side
3) On the bottom of the grips
4) Under the barrel (on the flat)
5) Under the Top strap
6) On the flat under the cylinder

So yeah... some people really really liked to put their DL # on guns...

Minor nitpick: At 84534, it would be a 1st or 2nd change (they overlap serial-wise). The 4th did not come about until a little above 241,000.

I have two revolvers, neither Smiths, that have the SS number etched onto them to prevent theft. With identity theft it seems crazy now but it was easily traceable then.

At least the engraving was done UNDER the grips, instead on the side plate or side of the frame.
