Your title is a bit misleading.
It certainly is a Baby Chiefs Special, and it shipped in April 1954, but it's not a Model of 1953 Chiefs Special. Yours has the small, roundish trigger guard and the shorter grip handle.
The Model of 1953 Chiefs replaced the Baby Chiefs, yes.
The earliest steel Model of 1953 Chiefs Specials, with the oval trigger guard, four-screw frame, and ⅛" longer grip handle, shipped in June '54.

That's a nice one. Is the ramp serrated? I'm still looking for a really nice serrated ramp version for the collection.

Yes, the last smooth ramp front sight known to those of us who track such things is 12743.
