Pre-War .38/44 Outdoorsman
This is another one I saw at the pawn shop today. Serial # (54176) on frame, cylinder, crane, ejector star and barrel match. Grips don't. Appears to be in good condition for it's age. No indications of a refinish and the screws are in good condition. It has an odd hammer, never seen one like this. I've always wanted a .38/44 but I think it's priced several hundred to high at $1900.

Nice Outdooorsman! It appears to have a King Cockeyed hammer which I believe is a $ add. Perhaps the sights are King as well. I would hesitate at that price but I'm not sure it's out of line with that revolver and its accessories.

It was definitely tempting. Old S&W's rarely show up around here and when they do the prices are usually very high.

That’s a beauty. I agree with Guy, that hammer is a definite plus. I would offer $1500 and go to $1600 if necessary. I like it.

Maybe it's the weather bringing these out...The Outdoorsman (S/N S71148) which I adopted two days ago has that exact same copy of a cockeyed hammer...On close examination it appears the original spur was cut and the new welded on...Mine may be a Kings or a copy, I'm not well versed enough in the nuances to be sure...I do know I like it...  ...Ben

38/44 ODs are the bees knees to me and that looks like a very nice gun to pick up if you can.
I do think it is very likely a copy of a King cockeyed hammer but not from King.
There are variations of Kings hammers but I am not seeing any of the obvious signs.
Most hammers will be stamped on the side by King;
Most will have a line just above where the hammer checking is.
Most will have a crook or lip I guess is the best way to describe it right at the end of the hammer pad area.
I hate using the term always, as with guns there always seem to be an exception to every rule. 
I had to replace a firing pin on one of my cockeyed hammers so maybe you will see the above mentioned thoughts.

The hammer is King if it's so stamped.
The sights are S&W----the so-called "two screw" version---first ever that won't shoot loose (when properly adjusted and locked)---and fit to all hand ejector targets from 1932 to 1942 (including the 357 Magnums and excluding the 22/40's).
As an aside, my pre-war Outdoorsman sold for about $2100-$2200 within the past two years----which is another way of saying I'd have been on this one at $1900 like a frog on a June Bug-------and SNAPPED IT RIGHT UP!!!

The one below it was an engraved Victory model. It was priced at $2200.

I ended up getting the Outdoorsman and the Triple Lock I posted in the other thread. He ended up dropping the price $450 for the pair. I just needed more money. They ended up having 120 guns from the collector. Probably 40% were Colts and the rest S&W. The majority were prewar. There were 5 pre-war Outdoorsman and 8-10 Heavy Duties. There was also a half dozen Triple Locks, a Schofield and a couple of No 3's.
