I finally got around to testing my nickel 1902 S&W 38 spl. using NORMA 158 GR. "practice ammo" - worked smooth & Perfect.

My minty S&W .45acp 1937 Brazil Contract (delivered to Brazil in December 1946 - same month & year of my Birth) Tested out perfectly, Shoots like new - but I'd like to find some of the taller checkered walnut grips I read were put on some of the later deliveries to Brazil. My original (numbered to gun) grips look good on my pistol - but hurt my hand a little, near the top where the bare frame hammers me.

Apparently not all "N" FRAME grips fit the 1917/1937 bottom grip width. I had to return some interesting N frame Faux Jigged Horn Grips - So I'd like some suggestions & pictures of what larger Period grip to look for - that would be both comfortable & appropriate for my late (1946 made 1937) Brazil contract revolver. Many Thanks, C.

The first shipment of Brazilian 1917s were assembled with checkered service grips. These had the round tops like the smooth grips you have currently. A second shipment was sent to Brazil in 1946. These revolvers were built on WW I surplus frames and many had the smooth grips.

I don't believe any of the 1946 Brazilian 1917s were shipped with Magnas. Pre WW II Magnas would fit, but are very expensive. My solution is to put custom Magnas on my commercial 1917. Search for Kurac on the Forum. He makes excellent Magnas that have a palm swell. Tell him you want ones for a pre war frame, as these are a tad longer than the post war N frames.

For range time, I use a set of modified N Frame target grips on my late issue Brazilian. While not a period grip, it helps with DA control and accuracy and moderates the impact on my hand better than the standard grips.

I guess if I was looking for a period grip, I'd find a set of magna grips and then use a Tyler T Grip for the best grip on the gun.

Just purchased this pr of new Rosewood Magnas. The seller says they fit his Brazil contract. They had just been put on Ebay & were affordable. I'm saving my originals. Were any rosewood Magna grips with bronze badges used on the 1937s ? What would these have been on ? Very good looking grips & should get rid of the OUCH. Any opinions ?

Those are modern grips that resemble the pre WW II Magnas. The 1930s pre WW II grips, both service style and Magnas, had large silver medallions. S&W used walnut for their grips until about the 1950s.

This is a picture of the new Model 27 (N frame), taken from the Smith & Wesson website.

Model 27 | Smith & Wesson

As I noted in the other thread, these may be a bit short at the butt.

I'll try to put up photos later - but my new Magna Rosewood grips with bronze medallion, arrived yesterday. Only a slight bit of fitting required. Bought them on Ebay & the seller was correct - they fit my Brazil contract (delivered in 1946) Beautifully. well worth the $71. I think. I've always preferred Rosewood to Walnut - Delighted with them - they look right on it.

Here they are, & a perfect fit. I think they look great on it, & will surely be more pleasant to hold while firing.

Like them ?

Here they are installed, very little fitting required.
I think these Rosewood Magnas add a lot to the appearance of my post WWII Brazil.
Do the experts find them acceptable ? They are Pretty & Practical.

Not to hijack the thread, but yesterday I bought yet another .38-44 Outdoorsman on a chance stop at a pawn shop...Definitely a transition gun, but the surprising part was when the sales clerk, whom I already knew, pointed out to me that he didn't think the Magna grips were original since they were a little longer than the grip frame...I agreed that they were probably salvaged from an earlier N frame, so he offered a small discount to allow for the deficit...

When I got the gun home, my surprise came when I found the right grip was numbered the same as the frame with the correct size and font for the stamp...My question is: Does anyone know exactly when the N frame grip length changed at S&W, and why this occurred......Ben

They look pretty good. The important thing is if YOU like them and if they fit your hand.
