I've sought out one of these since the Baby Chiefs bug first bit me.

They're a wee bit hard to find, and they're a bit "dear" when you do find one.

I grabbed this one for about the price of a nice blue Baby because it came with J-frame grips from the '80s (a guess since the right one doesn't have a serial number) that had the requisite ⅛" cut off the bottom to blend with the Baby's shorter grip handle.

Luckily I had gotten an appropriate pair of grips from a forum friend in a deal we'd done back in the spring. Thanks Mike! Their serial is 5883, and they almost fit this nickel Baby as if they'd been made for it.

The nickel is intact with only a few light scratches that will polish out and none of the often-seen "black" marks. Mechanics are flawless.

Without further ado, here is 14560, shipped in September 1952, thank you Dr. Jinks. It has a serrated front sight. First photo is the seller's.

Here are my "fraternal twins" and slightly younger siblings to your gun. One from November, 1953 and the other from December of 1953. I was lucky enough that the nickel one has the original grips. The blued gun, which has the gaudy gold wash trigger/hammer/cylinder release, now wears period correct grips. (but for $350 OTD I can overlook gaudy).

The serial numbers are 56 apart.

Howdy Bill,

Thanks for posting those.

Really interesting that your two Baby Chiefs are only 56 numbers apart, shipped late in '53, and have two distinct flat latches.

The nickel one has the newer latch, which has the slight ski-jump ramp and only 10 lands (or ridges). The first of those I've documented was 3455x, and last one of that earlier style was 3573x. I had come to believe the transition was pretty much complete by summer '53, but yours prove that's not quite true.

Thanks for pointing that out. I really never paid attention to them before. I suppose its possible that the blue gun's cylinder latch was changed when it was gold washed, but there is no way to know.

I have found during my time "accumulating" S&W's that the only thing in stone about S&W revolvers is that NOTHING is in stone about S&W revolvers.

Welcome to the Nickel Baby club, Bob! Great acquisition! 👍

I've got two Baby Chief's I/J frames. One in blue and one in Nickel. The Nickel one was my Dad's and has gazillions of rounds through it while the Blued one I bought brand new in original box about 25 years ago.

Thanks John and Ray.

For everyone: here's some nerdy, gee-whiz nickel Baby
Chiefs info:

I have serial number documentation on 458 Baby Chiefs.
That's about 1.09% of the known Baby Chiefs (I subtracted
the 3,777 Model of 1953 Airweights and several other known
Model of 1953 carbon steel Chiefs in the Baby serial number
range).

Much info (other than s/n's) is sketchy, but only 28 of the
Baby Chiefs on my list have a confirmed factory nickel finish.

The most allusive nickel Baby Chiefs are a 3" and a square
butt. I list one of each. Naturally, I want one of each, too!
