I'm embarrassed, what is this?
First the seller told me it was an 1899 so I went to look at it. When I got there he said it was a 1902. I thought it might be a 1905 4th change. Serial is C179821, frame, barrel, cylinder, stocks match. .38spcl. A little help? Thanks.

Don't be embarrassed.
All I can tell you is that it is a gun.

Looks like a pre-model 10 , Military and Police, from 1946. Do the numbers match on the grips (right side)? Looks in good shape!

Yes, grips match. Condition is pretty good. I just took a couple of quick pictures to help with ID. Seller is at $600 but I think he is negotiable.

He should be negotiable if he doesn't know what it is!
$499 would be a real deal.......

Yes, a postwar .38 M & P from about 1950 (JP@AK will be along shortly with more specifics).
A model 1899 would have had no forward locking point for the extractor rod, and a 1902 would have been a 4-screw frame. My guess is the seller used the assembly number, looked up a date and there you have it.

It is an M&P with a 5" barrel, as stated by others. At C179xxx it probably shipped sometime in mid-1951 to mid-1952. As always, the caveat is that they didn't ship these in serial order, so it could have left Springfield later. On the other hand, the .38 M&P was in high demand at the time, so the time frame noted above is most likely correct.
The stocks are period correct. The sharp shoulder was phased out in 1952. I'm not surprised that they number to the gun. I'd have bet on it. They appear to be in nice shape, as does the gun itself.
$600 is slightly on the high side with no box, but given today's inflated prices it is probably a buy at that price. I'd haggle a little if I were the potential purchaser.

Thanks to all for the help. The M&P models are not my focus when it comes to S&W revolvers but the condition caught my attention. I am much better at the 60's-70's wheelguns, the pre model numbers still baffle me at times. I tried to look in the S&W Catalog when I got home but that became a rabbit hole of information I need to study more closely if I am going to delve into the earlier stuff. I will talk to the seller again this week and see what flexibility he has in pricing.
