Hello Folks, Here's something I just happened across yesterday, & I thought that perhaps someone here would be be interested in the details, if of course it hasn't already been discussed ? I personally
would have loved to add this to my collection, as it's 'Lettered' to have been shipped to an area of which I have a special interest. It does appear that at least someone got a deal here, as it sold for what I feel was a very fair price ! Here's the original description, as edited by myself for brevity;

S&W MODEL1926 [ 3rd Model, H.E. ] .44 SPECIAL, 5" BARREL, BLUED FINISH, WOOD WALNUT STOCKS, w/ S&W FACTORY LANYARD LOOP.

ITEM DESCRIPTION: >>> COMPLETE w/ S&W 'FACTORY LETTER'. REFERRED TO AS; "WOLF & KLAR COMPANY MODEL". REVOLVER SHIPPED ON 21 AUGUST 1931 & DELIVERED TO THE 'PROVIDENCE POLICE DEPARTMENT', PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SERIAL # 38900.

DATE SOLD: 18 NOVEMBER 2017

SOLD FOR: $855.00 [ + Any corresponding Fees, Shipping, Sales Tax, FFL Transfer Fee, if applicable. ]

NOTES:

1) 'Possible' older, although fair / decent quality REBLUED FINISH !!

2) Revolver appears to be 'C & R' Eligible, as per Seller's description.

I hope it might have been someone here on the Forum that was fortunate enough to have grabbed this little gem ? I will say that based upon the date this Revolver was shipped out, I'm almost certain that it was present during some interesting investigations, & or patrols. I am indeed sorry I missed out on it !

Not sure why this would be considered W&K? I am used to seeing the ones from W&K being nickel plated with pawn shop engraving and either ivory or pearl handled grips carved with a steers head.

Can you post a photo of just the letter?

Kevin

That's exactly how I felt, somebody got a very sweet deal !! In reference to my Posting any additional photos, I'm sorry but I can't, as here were only 3 available in the original advertisement, & 2 were duplicates. So whatever was there I included below in my initial Post. I too would have greatly appreciated a shot of the Factory Letter, one with all the data visible. Although I'm certain we're all in agreement that it was indeed 'a deal', it was noted as possibly being an old red blue, which either may, or may not pose a problem with some collector down the road ? And, I too was wondering somewhat as to the 'Wolf & Klar' reference ? Unfortunately, as we're not fully able to view the Letter, that does leave us wondering a bit ? My 'guess' is that based upon the Seller's description, they appear to may have been relative novices in the S&W collecting realm, hence why they didn't provide a full view of the all the Letters details. Just maybe they read, or heard some reference regarding this M-1926 .44 Specials being related somehow to Wolf & Klar & just ran with it ? Hey, at that price someone could have bought it simply as an 'shooter', although that would have almost been a 'collecting sin', well, IMHO anyway. Personally, I've always had 'a thing' for heavy caliber Revolvers with Lanyard Loops !! In fact, at times I've even pondered sending my S&W M-21 [ -4 ] out to have an Lanyard Loop installed ! I did have a similar set up years back, an M-58, .4" .41 Magnum which I had a local Gunsmith install one for me. That was my designated 'back up' Revolver when hunting way up in Maine's Allegash Wilderness area. Sadly though, somebody offered me twice what I paid for it, so off it went !

Ooops, update, or perhaps I say an 'addendum' to my above Reply. There is indeed a reference to Wolf & Klar within the text of the Factory Letter, I hadn't taken the time to enlarge & read it prior to Posting. Sooo, that's apparently where the Seller came up with that reference from. I apologize for missing that !

Although a portion of it is illegible due to the Revolver covering it, a fair portion is legible, thereby at least allowing us to read some of it.
I attempted to load it 'large', but I'm not sure how it will come out ? If it's not enlarged on this Reply, just 'double click' it to enlarge for viewing, that's what worked for me.

I just more closely. Read the description and portions of the letter.

First, W&K were a Texas Pawn Shop. This revolver shipped to Rhode Island.

Second, the blue finish, not saying it did not happen, but I do not recall ever seeing a blued W&K.

Lastly, this sold nearly 4 years ago, not a bd deal but not like if it sold recently.

Over the years many factory letters for the Model 1926 S&W reference Wolf &Klar as the distributor that influenced S&W to come out with the .44 caliber 3rd Model HE (Model of 1926 ) to meet their customer's demands for such a revolver. The icing on the cake would be if the letter showed the gun actually went to Wolf & Klar ! A shipment to W&K in a blue finish, would be unusual. Ed

Now for me, I would have wanted it for the verified fact that it had been shipped to the Providence, RI Police Department !! RI documented items are my primary collecting interest, although I do have to admit that I've started to slow down on my purchases. I truly hate to admit it, but sooner or later we all have to think about what the heck we're going to do with all of our stuff.

Simple- a nickname for this model is the "Wolf & Klar" Model. It is because of their initial order that the gun was produced. I have heard it said that all of this model sold had to go through W&K. Even if shipped directly like these guns, W&K received a small "per gun" commission. I do not know if that is true. It was not cataloged as a separate model till 1941, but in some previous catalogs S&W had slyly stated that the 38/44 Heavy Duty could be ordered in 44 Spec.

You are laboring under two misconceptions here:

First, W&K was a pawn shop, but they were far more than the average pawn shop. They were a very large retail jewelry store, and a distributor of several brands of firearms, and they sold a lot of sporting goods. They had pearl and ivory grips manufactured. They had stores in other towns and states. They owned other pawn shops.

Second, Model 1926s were shipped to W&K in large batches, like 50-100 guns. They were often split between blue and nickel guns at roughly 50-50.
Yes, they engraved some.
Yes, they supplied many with pearl or ivory.
BUT- if you wanted a blue gun with Factory grips, I can assure you they had em!
I don't usually letter 44-3rds because I hate to spend the money just to find out what day my gun got to W&K, but I do currently own three blue guns with letters that shipped in blue to W&K. All three have their original Factory grips. Other people bought two of the letters before I bought the guns. :D

Back to the original topic, I'm pretty sure all the PPD guns are reblued. All I have ever seen were. I once had three PPD guns with consecutive serial numbers. :D;);)

Ed,
I have to disagree. I have owned many 44-3rds in nickel, but I'm currently down to one. I just prefer blue. Several times on this board people have posted their letters that were obtained in recent years and they included invoices showing the large batches shipped to W&K that contained a high percentage of blue guns.
I don't spend the money for letters because it is rare to get one that did NOT ship to W&K!
One exception I make is 6-1/2" W&K guns because they are so rare. I currently have two blue ones with letters, and neither shipped to W&K. They probably did not have much of a market for them (nobody did, apparently). ;)
One went to Hobbs Hardware in Raton, NM in 1933.
The other went to Frank T. Budge Co. in Miami in 1940.

Perhaps some of you guys with the invoices would post them, or maybe Doc44 could post some. :D

Way back in my Puppy Dog Days I was stationed in Ft. Worth.
I went to every Gun Store and a bunch of Pawn Shops.
I probably went into W & K but I had never heard of them!
I recall seeing N Frames in Large calibers, 44-45, lots of them Nickel, lots of apparent chopped barrels.
And those Cowhead Grips!
I had never heard of them, nobody really explained them to me, totally confused. And those Red Eyes? Really?
I also recall seeing a pair of Silver Grips with inlaid Mexican Coins.
Those I liked!

I had a blued 3rd Model .44 HE that was shipped to Wolf & Klar in 1932.
And that is one of the three blue 4" and 5" guns with letters that I mentioned above. :D
