New To Me Heavy Duty
I picked up this Heavy Duty a couple of months ago but still haven't had a chance to shoot it. From the SN (S63XXX) I think it is a 1946 model. It has a nice set of stag grips on it but I have no idea what kind of animal they are from Any ideas?

Very nice Heavy Duty. The grips are Sambar Stag.

Neat gun! By the hammer and serial I would say that it is a transitional, long action model. I like it..

Thanks. I’ve heard of Sambar Stag but wasn’t sure what it looked like.

Very nice, do you know any history on it? The stag grips and wear make me wonder where it’s been and what’s it done. Very interesting HD from my birth year. I like it. 👍

I believe this one might be called "transitional." Long throw action, large extractor rod knob and screw in hammer stud. Even though the rebound slide stud has been polished flat, it was probably a screw in as well. Also, I've read that Sambar stag is from an Indian deer.

Those sambar grips appear to me to be about as old as the HD ('50s anyway). What's the story on "picking it up" ? Do you have any owner history for it ? I really like it ..... VERY nice "pick up"

I have to agree with the 1946 date. The hammer, ejector rod, and single line address all point to a transitional HD. And I bet the stags could tell their own story! Nice find.

A local collector is having health issues (he's 80+) and has starting putting some of his guns on consignment at a local shop. He doesn't want to deal with the public so that's why he's going that route. He only collected revolvers and supposedly has around 600 Colt and S&W's. The shop has seen a list of them and no RM's unfortunately. Also many of the ones I've seen have been refinished. The Outdoorsman and Triple-Lock I posted on here came from the same group.

Great HD, should be a lot of fun at the range.
Heavy Duties seem to fall into two categories, rode hard and put up wet or new in the box, never seen the light of day, not a lot of in between.
I know that the two that I have saw a lot of day light, gave them character!

22lrfan, can you reveal the location of the shop that's getting these consignments? I see we are both in Mississippi. I hope it is close enough I can take a look.

It's Gold-N-Guns in Ridgeland. When I was there last Friday they were all gone. He came and picked up all the ones that hadn't been sold. I hope he's going to bring another bunch but haven't been able to find out. If they get more I'll let you know.

Thanks. I think I know that place. Isn’t it on Hwy 51 near Trace Grill? If so you can check out the gun store and get a good meal in the same trip.

Thank you for showing us that most excellent 38/44! I sense three little themes here.
First, great interest in the mechanics of that revolver, as it bridges time - from era of the long action into the design and mechanicals of our modern age. (itself a testament to the durability of the concept of such an arm)
Second, the enduring appeal of a mid range caliber, often the 357 magnum in our day, which has, some say, been watered a bit to be much more like the robust 38/44 of the early 1930s!
Third, the subtext than an older collector, who has kept such firearms safe from hard or disrespectful usage, is now "uploading" treasures to a new generation of custodians. Wonder what his/her thoughts would be, if interviewed, or even if a member here.
Much to admire.
