Model 36 with "X" Prefix in serial number

I'm not sure without seeing a photo, but I believe you're looking at the "assembly number."
The serial number should be on the bottom of the grip frame.

If your grips cover the butt of your Model 36 you need to take them off to see the serial number.
If your Chiefs Special has the original parts you'll see the same assembly number on the left side (not the bottom) of the grip frame.

The X is an inspector's identity code. The # is the assembly #.
Your Mod 36 is just a year or so too early to have the serial # on the frame in the yoke cutout. Since you apparently don't see a serial matching the butt # above the Mod 36 on the frame in the yoke cutout above the assembly # in your photo.
