I recently purchased a K-22 Masterpiece (Model 17) with serial number K34XXX. Can anyone please tell me the correct size screwdriver(s) to get for removing the side plate screws. It looks like there are three screws that are the same size around the trigger, one that is larger up near the hammer, and one (I think) under the stock. I have not seen that one because I have not removed the stocks yet.

Also, if you can please tell me the correct size screwdriver to get for the rear sight screws? I probably will not be adjusting the sights at all unless they are way off, so it's unlikely I'd get this one anyway, but on the off chance would like to know.

I own a lot of tools in general, and a few gunsmithing tools for rifles & scopes (not many), but for this revolver I would just like to purchase the correct size small gunsmith screwdriver(s) instead of getting a whole set. Thank you

The sight adjustment screw corresponds to the small screwdriver that came with the gun. Your serial number is from the late 1940s, so it would be the black one shown in the picture below (the newer silver one would work fine also).

As Goblin mentioned, Brownell makes a small set, but also a complete gunsmithing set. That would make a good investment if you plan to do any work on S&W revolvers. The bits are hollow ground, which makes for good bit/screw fit and helps you avoid slipping off the screw if you work carefully.

Weaver also makes a good driver/bit set for the same purpose. I actually have one set from each company; one I bought years ago and one I inherited. I've used them both from time to time.

The whole set for a S&W revolver from Brownells is known as "S&W Revolver Combo". The stock/part number is 080-087-004AN-----consists of a handle and four bits (which fit sideplate, grip, thumb latch, and rear sight adjusting and tang screws)---------and one presumes one knows you DO NOT pry sideplates off under any circumstances whatsoever---------never mind what you might see mental midgets on YOUTUBE doing.

Further questions are welcome.

Be cautious. Depending on the age of the gun, there is a variation in the slot size of the screws. Especially the large top side plate screw. With the S&W 3 blade set I find I had to grind a little off the sides of the blade as it was about 1/64 " too wide for one I had, but fit others fine. This is why most who work on their guns usually but the whole set.

Thank you kindly to all for this useful information, very much appreciated. Take care

And in case he and other don't know... may as well say how to do it. After the screws are removed, rap the heel of the grip frame with a screwdriver handle, until it causes the side plate to disengage from it's mating surfaces in the frame and pop loose.

I have a Wheeler 89 Piece Screwdriver KIT that hasn't failed me on Handgun Screws BUT
Have altered a screwdriver with a stone for some 4th Screw S&Ws
Good Luck & Don't Bugger up those screws

Let me throw my 2 cents in...If this revolver is "museum quality"...wait till you procure a "shooter" to practice on...I'm all in favor of going in full bore, but take your time and gage your abilities...in other words, don't rush into a beautiful gun and bugger it up...they scratch really easily and it is difficult to go back. That much I know.

Brownell’s also sells a pair of hollow grind wheels for use in a drill press to fashion your own “custom fit” screwdrivers.
