Photos will help a lot toward answering your question by hitting the manage attachments button and browsing to the file

Welcome to the forum.
95% might get you a very rough ballpark figure. But one person's 95% estimate may not look like everyone else's, nor does it confirm if it's 95% of the original blue, or the 2nd or 3rd re-blue.
Not a lot different from evaluating cars; good photos, details and accessories are everything.
Take to a gun shop and have them look it up in the Blue book of gun values. Then take to another shop and compare results.

Based on the information given, it’s a solid bet that these revolvers are probably worth somewhere between $750 and $25,000 each.

RM's were essentially custom guns....they could be ordered with various barrel lengths, different sight options, grip options, etc. All of the features can affect the value of the individual gun. That's why we ask for pictures and more info.
Good luck with getting more info....it will be interesting to see!

Post some pictures, we'll give our best estimates. . . and those are likely to vary widely. The more and sharper the pictures the better information you'll get. Also include any associated materials; boxes, registration form, etc. etc. as all those pieces are valuable; any family/owner history is helpful too. You'll probably get some offers as well.

Don't go to a gun shop. Post good pictures and descriptions here. You are less likely to get shafted and more likely to get good info.

Yes if he can post good photos here.
But he can go to a gun shop and ask for the blue book value; just not ask what they'll give him for it. Those are two different numbers.

There are WAY more variables to value than just condition, although it is a big one. And, as pointed out, "95%" is subjective, irrespective of the implied accuracy of using a percentage. Welcome to the forum. You can get great answers if you supply more information. As is, your asking for a haircut over the phone.

hey,
Sweetwilly... I realize that there would be no way for you to know this, but the brain trust that lies within this forum literally wrote the book/s on S&W and collectively hold more information about the company and its products than S&W itself - and they will kindly (maybe with a bit of jealousy given that your first post has you holding not one, but two RM grail guns that collectors spend decades looking for) share all of this knowledge with you for the low price of $free.99.

Another aspect of the value, and this is very subjective, might have to do with the inheritance itself!
It may be something as simple as sentimental value.
Or, perhaps, the ancestor had some unique or colorful history that particularly relates to the ownership (and use!) of not one, but two Registered Magnums?
That might be as interesting (or more so) to hear about as seeing some pictures!

I need one. Do you have a slot open this afternoon? You got my phone number.
Also, I have a nice Ford pickup. What's it worth?

Yeah, that's what I'd charge Lee for a haircut. :-)
I hope we didn't scare the OP off. Maybe it was just a drive-by.

You may want to revise your estimate when you consider all the places big monkeys can grow hair...
And I hope that thought doesn't scare away the OP... ...Ben

To all...
did not want to start a war. The rifleman had an article on the guns, but value was subjective, so I thought I would see if anyone had some thoughts. Also have letters from Smith. Since I am new here how do I go about putting pics on here.

Not a problem. We are just trying to tell you that the more data we have, the more we can help. When we didn't hear from you, we started goofin off. You can't leave us unsupervised too long.
Give us the specific configurations of the guns. If you have letters, tell us who they shipped to.
There is a BIG difference in value for a gun ordered by a Texas Ranger or FBI agent compared to one shipped to a hardware store for inventory.

Hope pics come soon. Reminds me of the old car boards when someone posts "I inherited this really old fiberglass body convertible" and the conjecture begins...

Hi all...
Here are the pics. Sorry that they are all seperate. I was raised in Butte mt as was my father. he was a competitive shooter, reloader, and part-time gunsmith, in Butte. I have no idea if he purchased these himself or horse traded, which was his favorite pastime. I also included a pic of my 44 Rem mag. Bill

As for these Registered Magnums you have the winning ticket in the Smith & Wesson lottery.

Curious to see what the brain trust thinks these two are worth.

Sweetwilly, those are truly sweet! Can you share a little of the history with us? In your first post you wanted to know their worth; well, it is a lot. Beautiful guns, all of them.

The guns were shipped to the Montana Hardware Co. one in 35 and the other in 39. Since the Montana Hardware went out of business in 73, they were a part of the ACM co.. I am trying to find records for the sales of guns to try to find who they were sold to. Bill

Bill, the S&W Historical Foundation may be able to help find information on those guns. You might check with Doc44 about that.
Also, let me be the first to invite you to join the S&W Collector's Association. We have a symposium in June in Concord, NC. It would be a delight to see a display of your guns there.

I have letters, and will post pics, with my name removed soon. I am a member of the SWCA #3716. On the letters the historian said that there might be more info, so will contact him and find out. Bill

I’d say your 95% is very accurate. There is nothing like in hand evaluation, but my thought’s are they are on the upper end of the scale. My round number is 9-12k each considering boxes sight adjustment tools and you mentioned letters. A lot of factors influence the final value. Using a trusted seller on an auction sight would yield the maximum value but there are cost associated. Good luck with them. Were they mine I’d have a very tight grip on them!
