I have an opportunity to purchase a Model 10 four screw no dash, $450. Specs are
Model 10 four screw square butt with 6 digit C low 500300 serial number, 2" barrel, diamond grips one matches the gun serial number the other is unnumbered. bluing is perfect, looks to have been shot very little with no wear from any type of carry. Only cosmetic issue is one grip is a lot darker than the other, the fit is perfect but definitely a very different color.
Is this a good price in todays market?

Based on age and description, I think it is a great price.
I'd buy it if it was in front of me.
My prediction is 95% opinions in favor of you snapping it up quickly

Its not a model 10 - that comes several years later. Its either just a post-WW2
M&P, or its one of the short-action post-WW2 M&P's . The serial number would help.
For a 2" M&P, the price is good.

This is one to check all the numbers on before you jump in. Butt, barrel flat, cylinder, yoke, underside of ejector star. If they all match, buy it.

Only one I did not see any number on was the cylinder, usually they are on the rear face correct, I did no see any numbers any where on the cylinder, the yoke number matched
The barrel was pristine so it did not make any sense that the cylinder would have been replaced.

I know there are a lot of fine S&W's on the market for $450 instead of a worn out M&P. I'd pass on it.............I.M.O.

Well I do not know where you got worn out from; the gun looks new except for the grip discoloration.
My purpose for this gun is concealed carry, what others do you suggest that would fit my needs at this price and in a revolver?

Mike, I wonder what made you say this isn't a Model 10. The Book lists C474xxx through C622xxx as 1961-1962. The reason I'm curious is that The Book lists C429xxx-C474xxx as 1960 and, curiously, David Carroll lists a non-model-marked Pre-Model 10 as C459xxx in his March catalog. That would fall in the 1960 range and ought to be model-marked. Any insight? Just the usual out-of-order use of serial numbers?

Donald,
The post originally stated it was an S serial number, and I had not stated it was marked model 10 before the edit. I had made a mistake. That is why he said it was not a model 10.

Apparently I didn't read the posted serial number correctly, or somehow got myself confused.
I agree that it should be model marked, and model 10 would be right. My mistake.
At C500000, that is probably the upper end of the price spectrum.
