I have a chance to purchase a 1950 Model Target 44 special (S99XXX) in 98% condition for $900. For an additional $100, I can purchase the box which is a gold box marked 1926 Model 44 Target with paper in fairly good shape. Would this be considered a good deal or not? Thanks.

You should definitely purchase the box. If it is original to your revolver, the serial number will be written in black grease pencil on the bottom. Even if the box is not original to your revolver, it is still a good price to pay for it.

Yep I'd buy it if it was in that shape. I would also buy the box if it is in decent shape. It is not correct for the gun, but worth twice the asking price IMHO

Brick, I'd be all over that deal. You should be whipping out your checkbook so fast that you and the guy on the other side of the deal both get windburn from the air turbulence. In California I would expect to pay quite a bit north of that for the package you describe. I don't know where you are, but my guess is that would be a deal in almost any state.

I want to thank everyone for their replies. When I get it, I will have the same decision that other people have talked about, do I shoot it or not. I will have to cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks again.

I believe that is the correct box for the gun. It probably has a white sticker saying "Model of 1950" placed diagonally over the top right front. Worth way, way north of $100.

NIB stays NIB. 98% you can shoot -- at least a few times!

The box does not have a white sticker on it and I could not find any markings on the bottom to indicate a serial number.

That's a great deal!
What kind of grips does it have, and is the serial number stamped on the underside of the right grip panel?
Is it satin blue finish or bright blue finish? According to Nahas and Supica's Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Ed. the bright blue finish is worth a 25% premium over the satin blue.
Here's a pair of them in bright blue:

John: Wow! Those are great looking .44's! Puts my 5" Model 1950 to shame, but it is a shooter, not a safe queen. In terms of value, I suspect that even a shooter (98%) should go for well over 1K out here on the left coast. They seem to get 'spendier' every year!

O.K., I'm way out of my league here, but FWIW, I almost bought a Model 24-3 at a recent gun show in Central FL. It had a 4" barrel and I would say it was in 99% condition. The dealer's best offer was $850 out-the-door; so, after much thought I passed on it, but here is the kicker: the revolver came in an original blue S&W box for a 1950 Model Target .44 Special. It had all the papers that went with the box, but the box wasn't gold; it was blue. When it comes to S&W factory boxes I don't know $#!% from Chinola, but the papers and the blue box I saw matched.

GB,
The 24-3s came in blue two-piece boxes as you describe.

I purchased the revolver and box today. It has the satin blue finish with diamond magna stocks. It also came with an 85th anniversary catalog (1938) with a 1937 price list. I am going to clean it and try to photograph it.

Gunbarrel,
That's the kind of gun deal I love to find. For that model gun in 4" and that price in the box, it's a "buy now and think about what to do with it later" kinda purchase. If I decide not to keep it, I'll have a friend that is glad I grabbed it so he can buy it from me.
I just bought one with that reasoning. A 1950 44 target from SC on an auction, made in 1955, satin 6" barrel, 98-99% with original diamond solid top target stocks for $1000. Waiting for it to arrive.

Brick,
Can't wait to see that beauty, congratulations! Made in 1953-54. I assume it's a 6"?
I just bought the bunk mate to yours. A 1950 44 target from SC on an auction, # 142XXX made in 1955, 5 screw, satin 6" barrel, 98-99% with original diamond solid top target stocks for $1000. Waiting for it to arrive.

I guess I am an absolute dummy but I have been trying to figure out how to put pictures in and I am following the instructions given to whelenshooter and I am totally lost. I have the picture at tinypic but how do I get it into this? Do I start the process while I am in REPLY mode? If so, how do you get to tinypic in this mode? I could not find a copy button in tinypic to paste to this forum. I am lost. Help.

Copy the entire IMG code for your photo on the left side of the tinypic page and paste it in your posting here.
Jerry
This image is directly from tinypic! Click the "quote envelope" below and you can see the IMG code for the pig image.

Jerry, what is a "quote envelope"? I was not able to click on anything in your message. How do I get from the reply box to tinypic? I could not find a copy button in tinypic. I just don't understand how to do this.

Look at every posting and in the extreme lower right hand corner there is a yellow envelope with quote marks on it. Go to my "pig" post and click on that envelope. Rather than the pig photo showing up there will be an IMG code line that looks kinda like this:
[IMG]http://i40.tinypic.com/2hqyvd.jpg[/IMG
Go to your photo in tinypic. On the left side of the page that shows your photo there will be a bunch of code lines. Use your mouse to COPY the line that is IMG code like the one above.
Simply PASTE this IMG code into your post here on the FORUM.
Jerry

Jerry, I guess I am about as dense as they come. When it comes to computers, I have to have a line by line explanation of what I am to do in order to do something new. I am able to operate AutoCad 2008 because that is my job but this is something entirely different and until I have done it several times I have to refer to a cheat sheet of some sort. Do I go to reply first? If so, how do I get from reply to tinypic to get the photo? As I said before, I cannot find a copy command to copy anything in tinypic. How do I copy and paste (and in what sequence)? As I said, I have to have a step by step instruction when it comes to computers. Thanks. Brick

I have this one that was shipped in january 1955. It is a safe queen that has only had a few rounds through. It had the original smaller service stocks when I bought it from a old collector friend 40 years ago. I put the targets on it and cant find the originals!

Brick:
Go to tinypic.com and log in.
Select and open the photo you want from your own photo files.
Once you select an image the IMG code should show up (along with others) on the left side of the screen.
Copy and save that code.
Now open the S&W Forum site & come to this thread.
Open a “Reply’.
Paste that code and any message you want.
Post it !
Here is what the tinypic page will look like but your photo will be where Betty Boop is located
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2rhmvbc&s=2
Give it a try.
If all else fails follow 29aholic's plan !
