Another S&W 357 Magnum
Anxiously awaiting a new set of grips for my 357 magnum {137XXX}. I picked this up a few years ago at an estate auction. It was very dirty when I got it with grease inside the cylinder and bore. Which is probably why it did not bring the money I thought it would. Brought it home and cleaned it up with some Hoppes #9 and the bore and the cylinders are bright. This piece shows signs of being carried quite a bit. The holster in the picture came with the piece and is made by J.W. Bauer MAKER. I was not able to find any info on J.W. Bauer, if anyone has info would appreciate to hear from you.

Those grips look to me like rosewood... they are pretty nice in themselves. You didn't identify the serial as having an S or an N prefix, so my guess is that it is an S. Very cool rig!

Nice gun and fabulous stocks!
Those are early non-relieved presentation stocks. They're harder to find than Cokes and worth 2-3X more than early diamond Magna's.

There is (was?) a Bauer Bros. holster maker in St. Louis during my 20 year residence there---a mere 60 years ago. Their stock in trade wasn't low end merchandise, but somewhere in the middle---good quality, but nothing approaching fancy. Same outfit? Related outfit?

I've got a set of the correct diamond magnas for your 357. Be happy to trade them for those beat up old clearly incorrect ones that are on it.

Very handsome gun and holster you have there! Could we see pictures of the back of the holster? Sometimes the stitching as well as the makers mark give clues.

Nice gun.
The non-relieved rosewood target grips are quite valuable as well.
Never heard of that holster maker, probably a small outfit or one man shop, but that's a nice quality holster.

That holster looks like it would be used for plainclothes use by someone who is prepared for serious business, hence a .357, not merely a .38 Special. Target stocks harder to conceal but better for shooting. That's a pretty special combination!

When I bought this revolver the grips was on her. Looking at how much wear that is on the grips matches the wear on the revolver. So they will stay with her. I prefer magna style grips over target for my style of shooting. Thanks

Thanks for the extra holster photos. Well made in a classic design. Sorry, no information on the maker.
That’s a gun and holster meant for serious work and I like them both.

Here's another set, at least I think they're rosewood, which came off another pre-27 from the same timeframe.

JW Bauer Holster
OP - A nice revolver and a mighty fine looking holster.
For some reason that J.W. Bauer name looked familiar (and not because of the mix-up with Brauer Bros.).
Possibly because I had this A.W. Maier Holster?
A.W. Maier was a saddle-maker in business from 1914 to 1947 in Fredericksburg, TX.
Okay, so your holster appears to be more recent and there were and are a quite a few German saddle-makers in the Texas Hill Country.
As a matter of fact, there is a J.W. Bauer living in Fredericksburg right now. Could it be him? (We need to do more research.)
