K 22 Outdoorsman Box
I recently posted about the K 22 Outdoorsman I bought. It came with a box. That is it, the box, no tools. There is a paper inside the box.
My question is what value do I put on the box for insurance purposes. What would I have to pay for one like this?
Thanks, John

That box appears to be in very good condition with vibrant color. On ebay a box like that would bring $400-$500. I know some will say that might be high, but based on recent observed auctions, I would value the box around those numbers.

I would think valuing at $500 as HeloMt suggests might be ok for insurance purposes. I don't insure any of mine, or guns, but that's a personal decision. You don't tell us the SN or if it is the same as the gun or the version of the K22. There's one with box for sale on the Classifieds for $6900. The owner of that one might value the box a bit higher than $500.

Probably $500-$600. I've seen them sell for up to $800. People that buy them, are REALLY wanting one.

That’s a very nice box, great outside color and the image is intact and clear. I have a few without boxes but even without a gun for it I’d jump at that for five.

I was thinking $300 - $600 in that condition (well used, but nice). If it is THE box, it is worth more to that specific gun than as a stand alone box - in my opinion.
I also love Outdoorsman boxes... and the guns that shipped in them and I have a hard time passing up a well priced box, with or without the gun :

The box in the classifieds is a Masterpiece box. They bring $800-$1000 if in decent condition.
I do agree 5-600 hundred on a Outdoorsman box in shown condition.
I have been looking for a nice one and they seem to sell quick.

Thank you all for your input.Where would the serial number be on the box. I see no serial number anywhere.
I was told it isn't the correct box for the gun, but with no serial number on the box, who knows?

If the serial number is not on the bottom of the box most will not recognize it or add the extra value of it being "thee" box.
If your OD is in really nice condition it's certainly worth keeping the set together. If not some might consider selling the box as it will likely be worth more sold separately. OR consider holding on to it in case you may need it down the road.
The whole thing is a bit of a collectors conundrum.

Well sure enough there is a serial number on the bottom of the box,
9579 and below it is HELN. It isn't THE box for my gun.

That's okay. If your outdoorsman is in like condition, keep them together. You'll be hard pressed to find another one and it definitely adds to the overall package. It might not be "the box", but it's the right box.

Well, there are sure enough different strokes for different folks---or each to their own, as these sayings go.
I valued THE boxes highly---paid good money to have them repaired as needed, and kept them safe from deterioration.
I regard A box as a worthless piece of cardboard.
That said, I have it on GOOD authority I'm very likely a member of a distinct minority----and not too bright!
I was once dickering for a 22/40---with A box--and a screwdriver. (The box was very likely in the best condition I'd ever seen--about as close to new as you're ever going to see.) I asked for a price without the box and screwdriver. David Carroll was at my side, poked me in the ribs; and whispered, "That's a thousand dollar box, Dummy!" (The seller didn't want to break up the package, and offered a reduced price.) I bought the package.
I have no memory of what I did with the box/screwdriver----very likely gave them to David, but can't say for sure. One thing is for sure: I didn't take them home with me.

The SN for a K-22 Outdoorsman would be in the 63XXXX to 68XXXX range and would have been written on a small white (1.5" X 1/2") narrow tab pasted on the bottom of the red "picture box" (the earlier K-22 O/Ds that shipped in the hinged maroon "patent box" had the SN written in pencil on the bottom of the box). Occasionally for later guns, there may be a "H.B.H." below the SN on the white tab if it had a humpback hammer... Often times the label has worn off and then we have no idea what gun it belongs to...
Congrats on getting the gun AND the box. As you can see, I like to keep them together (even if the boxes don't have the exact same numbers as the gun).

I just sold an Outdoorsman box at the Louisville gun show this weekend for $500. Your box looks to be in slightly better condition. I have another in similar condition to yours, maybe slightly better, that I gave $700 for and I’d be willing to sell it for that amount but no less.

I found this box at a local shop paid $200.
No number on the bottom.

That’s my listing. The gun is a 2nd Model Masterpiece or K-22/40 and the box is a rarely encountered Masterpiece box rather than that for an Outdoorsman.

I think this is probably the number: $600 OTD would be a good buy for a box in good condition. Obviously if it numbers to your gun it’s adds to the package.

No white label on mine the numbers are written on the bottom of the box. I'm waiting to hear what the numbers means. As I'm betting it isn't the serail number.

Of all the red O/D picture boxes I have seen, I do not recall any of them with pencil/pen markings on the bottom like that. Even if the writing is part of the SN (i.e. last four digits), I'm guessing that the writing is some prior owner's notation with "HELN" perhaps referring to "Hand Ejector, Like New".

As a distinct aside, if/when you may decide to insure your collection, DO NOT add them to your Homeowners contract with comparing costs/coverage. Compare with a specialty carrier----one specializing in collectibles. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.
It's been awhile since I knew enough about the market to make any recommendations, but one of them---likely the best of them should be found by asking Mr.Google to tell you about "collect insure".

I had my good friend and fellow OGCA member looking for boxes (1920-1975) this past weekend in Wilmington but no luck. I need to get up there soon and take some for sale items with me.
