Brain trust - - - ASSEMBLE!!

I'm doing a bit of digging around on the New York Police Target Model Revolvers.

In going through documents it is inevitable that people with use their own shorthand, abbreviations, truncations and other assaults on the English language to save time and ink. The result is that I am only saving documents that --specifically-- say NEW YORK Police Target Model or NEW YORK police Model.

Here's where I need the brain trust help:

There seem to have been fixed sight and target sight M&P's before the war.

What is the difference between:
M&P Target Revolvers
M&P Police Target Model

I have various theories, one of which is based upon the front sight; that the sight width of 1/18" or 1/10" (the norm) may be a deciding factor.

I've also noticed that guns are ordered with no mention of grooved front/back straps and others specifically mention this feature (BTW, RB grooved backstraps should probably have a premium attached for rarity. I found at least one document where S&W say that at the time (1926) they are unable to provide this but may at a later date).

I'm working on a deaccession report for a musket from the NYS museum for a school project so thats keeping me busy but will try to list out my theories and why I think the may have merit.

If anyone has an Police Target Model or New York Police Model or New York Police Target Model information, I'd love to see it here. Article fodder?

Big difference. M&P target models have fully-adjustable sights. 'Plain' M&P's have forged front sight blades, half moon shaped, and the 'standard' rear sight channel milled into the top strap of the frame. Police targets are M&P's that have the different-shaped forged front sight blade, and a slightly different rear sight channel as the rear sight.

I have only one pre-war target, a 1905 3rd change probably from 1914. No grooves on frame or trigger. Standard target sights as far as I know.

I'm in the middle of cleaning one of mine, shipped 3/26/1924 to EK Tryon Co. with non-monogrammed grips...Single screw rear sight, Patridge front sight, ungrooved front and rear grip straps, small left side logo, Made In USA stamp......Ben

I have a 4th Model Target, #561691. According to Mr. Jinks it was shipped in April 1927. It has the grooved front and back straps as well as the trigger. Single screw adjustable rear sight and a standard Patridge front sight. The front sight appears to be 1/18". Non monogram grips, small S&W emblem on left side.
