please help with ID and date of manufacture
S&W, 5" barrel, serial 4024 on butt, last patent date on barrel Oct 4 98
What is the model, and when was it made. I recognize the condition issues and missing part. All help appreciated. Thank you.

You have a Model 1899, .32-20 Hand Ejector, 1st Model. It was likely made around 1902. There were only 5311 made between 1899 and 1902. This model was also called the "Winchester Model" within S&W.

I have 5629, 5", nickel. It shipped on April 1, 1902.
3265, a 6 1/2", blue, also shipped in April, 1902.
Obviously, they were not shipping these in any sort of serial order.

That's a nice little Model 1899 .32-20, but with obvious finish and condition issues. If you're a DIY guy, it would make a great restoration project...replace parts, clean up the nickel. How's the bore and the internals? I'm not sure that you would want to have it refinished due to cost, but it would be an option if this revolver is a family heirloom or has some provenance. Enjoy!
