Default F.E. Warren master engraved with gold enlay pre 27

Here are a few not so great pictures of one of my favorites. I know the grips need replaced and will be swapping them out. Thanks for your time.

What a fun gun. I really like the lined background on the cylinder. I would not complain if you were to post more photos...

Thank you so much for sharing!!!

I like that one a lot, especially the inlays and gold lines; really nice. I have an F E Warren engraved 29-2 but without gold inlays. I think the grips are fine with it too, probably original and numbered to the gun? That said, some ivory magnas would look great too. Or perhaps a set of Ken Driskill's (bigmtnman) moose magnas such as are on this pre-war HD.

I'll try and take more pictures soon Richard..Jeff,your grips look nice, and love your gun. I was thinking ivory, but left the current grips on because they are numbered to the gun. Thanks for the nice comments

Very subtle...Barely noticeable at first glance...First class work...If Ken Driskill has had any donations from Bullwinkle the Moose lately, I can definitely recommend his work for this gun!......Ben

The first time through the pictures I didn't even bother looking at the grip

I did look at the grips my second time looking at the pics

That is a spectacular looking revolver and as Richard has already implied we do love pictures here on the forum

I would love to own a long barreled 357 Magnum N frame like that one. It makes a nice addition to anybody's family of Smith and Wessons

While I am always a big fan of nicely grained ivory, but with a revolver that has this much intricate work on it you might want to go with something a little less attention grabbing and a little more complementary.

Culina can make grips out of a very large assortment of great looking woods and you might consider something from them perhaps a nice French cake walnut which is what I chose for my engraved model 57

There are many other woods to chose from as well, both lighter and darker

The problem with a gun as nice as yours is that you will never be able to take it to the range to shoot because you'll wind up spending all your time looking at it in a new light and admiring how nice the engraving looks.
Beautiful gun and thanks so much for sharing.

Floyd was from Ohio,,I believe.
He and engraver John Warren are often confused with eachother.
They engraved at about the same time period. John Warren was from Mass.
I've been told they were distant cousins with a not too good of a personal relationship betw them,
Others have said there was no family connection at all...So that solves that issue.

Floyd engraved a lot of guns. His work was stalled and then stopped engraving altogether in his later yrs because of eye trouble.
But medical advances in eye surgery and other eye care brought back his vision to the point where he was able to engrave again at a late age.
He then engraved pretty much up to his death in the early 2000's.

One thing on the revolver stands out to me and that is the scroll work on the cylinder.
It looks as if it's cut by a different person but copying that which covers the rest of the revolver.
It is smoother cut with nicer sweeping arcs and transitions of one scroll to another. It is slightly deeper and cleaner cut.
The single lined background is different from the rest of the gun of course from what I can see.
One other small are has that lined technique as well and that is the rounded pivot joint of the yoke/crane.
That area has been single line background cut the same way.

What I'm thinking is it may be a gun that Mr Warren started when eyesight was going down hill. Then never finished and put away.
When his eyesight was medicaly brought back to where he was again able to engrave, he may have finished the gun and at that time did the cylinder. That would account for the slight difference in and better quality and the addition of the new background technique.
The yoke pivot which was my quess left blank the first time around was then lined as well to make the revolver a complete full coverage.

Just my thoughts of course, I may be way off.
But I know personally what it feels like to be going through bad eyesite issues and struggling trying to engrave. Something that was before that such an easy process.
Then having surgery and meds to bring back my eyesite to slightly better than it was before the loss (in one side at least!)
I have one engraved piece that I did for myself that I struggled thru with that poor eyesite and I now wish I had not pushed myself to complete it.
It sits in a drawer.

Thanks for your input. The engraving on the gun is definitely the same and was commissioned by a gentleman and received back from the engraverwith no long period between.

I'll add a couple pictures of my F E Warren 29-2 just to compare the scroll work and to follow up on 2152hq's comment from yesterday. I assume the '77 timeframe would have been before he might have been troubled with eye issues but am not at all knowledgeable of the time period when he was working.

Shootgood, that revolver is spectacular! I like it a lot. The gold deer inlay is awesome, as is the deep engraving. Looks like you found some great new shoes too. How long have you owned this wonderful piece?

Very cool gun.
Thanks for letting us view it.
I also didn't pay any attention to the stocks first time through.

As a grip junkie and with the border set up for magnas.
A choice I haven't seen mentioned yet would be roasted birdseye maple.
I think that would match up well with the gold.

Gorgeous, The grips are correct, but it does need something a little nicer. Whomever you get to do them, don't have them checkered, it tends to detract from the wood grain. (That's why most all factory presentation grips aren't checkered).

Remind me where that beautiful gun is located? Along with the very nice class A engraving, that beauty also has the uncommon/short-lived Blanchard red insert on the front sight, (typically only found on guns shipped in 1952).
