I'm certainly not an expert, but my guess is that someone took a pair of "presentation" stocks and did some nice engraving. Reason I make that suggestion is because I bought some kinda similar off Ebay several years ago. I put them on a 586 no-dash of mine.....see the pic below. Don

That was my thought also...The gun is a couple hundred miles from here, and I don't feel like making the drive just to look at the back side...Besides, I have plenty of Outdoorsman's to fondle already... ...Ben

Ben,
Nice custom stocks.
The next time you get to handle these stocks look at the backs. Sometimes there are jig marks to hold the wood while being checkered that provide a clue as to who the maker is.

Thanks, Jim, and all for the comments...I doubt I'll ever get that close to them...I didn't figure them for factory work, the biggest clues being the size of the diamond around the screw hole, and the shape of the border at the top of the checking...I only thought someone might recognize whose work was involved in transforming factory stocks... ...Ben

Whereabouts?
To go 200 miles from Conroe there are only three choices, right?
Inquiring minds would like to know.

It's a big state so there are many directions to drive without crossing any state lines...And speaking of crossing lines, I remember the one about not posting active sales so I'll PM you the location... ...Ben

Handy hint, all factory grips are made with the slotted head on the left grip panel.

I was thinking non-relieved smooth targets that someone checkered and shortened.

Two sets have peaked my interest. Obviously by the same place!
Curious they use the double border on the bottom but single border on top. Also the checking looks like older elongated checking.
Kansas please show us the backs of your set!
Are they factory but modified like they appear?

S&W stocks were all about symmetry in design. Look at any factory diamond target stocks and you will immediately see that the checkering angle is always set up so that the diamond center aligns with the curve of the stock. Your stocks are definitely not S&W and it looks like they did not know how to set up the checkering to provide that important feature of factory target stocks.
They are thin compared to factory target stocks and, as noted above, perhaps one could sand off the original checkering and apply their own??
