Default What about these pre-war grips?

Local guy has this Victory for sale on a local forum. It's obviously nickeled and no lanyard ring. I am unsure of serial number.

However, what about these grips? Seller says they are "pre-war large medallion grips" or somesuch. He only shows this view of the gun, so I don't know what the other side of the grips look like nor what they are made of.

Kinda like the grips more than the gun itself. Anybody know where these were made?

Those look like catalin, which is the material used. I have never seen any with medallions, but that doesn't mean much. Very interesting. I've attached a pic of a set that I have.

Without looking catalin up, is it some sort of imitation bone or ivory that was used on grips in the past?

NVM....Looked it up. It looks like Bakelite's first cousin.

The same material was used for the grips on the Colt SAA that john Wayne carried on his hip in a great number of his westerns......Ben

The screw on the OP's grips are on the wrong side to be S&W but I like them anyway.

I like the grips too. However, I think $750 for a chromed Victory is a tad on the high side.

My LGS had an older S&W, probably a third model hand ejector, that had a set of wood service grips with that big medallion, a couple of days ago. The gun itself was blue/almost black, and had a star on the grip, next to the S/N. I believe that star indicates a refinish? It looked very nice actually.

Now that gun was tagged at $450.00. I don't think I had ever seen that big medallion before. I actually though the gun was some sort of "off brand" gun at first based solely on that medallion.

The star indicates that the gun was at some point returned to the factory for some type of work, possibly including refinish.

I agree that they appear to be Catalin. Here’s another pair.
The only reference that I have found is to a Maurice Scharlack from Corpus Christi, Texas, who allegedly made Catalin grips from the 1920’s to the 1940’s.
