Help Identifying 38 S&W Special CTG
Hello, I was hoping someone could tell me more about this revolver? It looks like it has a 5 digit serial number and a 4-3/4" barrel.

Check the bottom of the barrel and back of the cylinder for the serial number.

Lee is correct. The number you show on the yoke is NOT the serial number. In addition, the aftermarket stocks are covering the serial number on the butt, however, the picture of the butt without the stocks seems to have the second digit missing. As Lee noted, it will be on the barrel flat and the rear of the cylinder (along with two other hard to see locations).
I will also point out that your revolver has a 5" barrel. It should be measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle.

So, it is a .38 Military & Police model from about 1919. The last patent date on the barrel should be Dec 29, 14 (1914).

Welcome to the Forum. Does the revolver have a square or round butt? Hard to tell with that rubber grip. A nice set of original walnut or hard rubber S&W stocks would really be a nice addition.

A characteristic of the S&W revolvers made during the WWI era is that they lack the S&W logo stamp anywhere on the frame or side plate. I cannot tell from your picture whether yours has or doesn't have the stamp. It probably does not. Finding a period correct pair of original grips would be a little difficult and expensive. Nothing wrong with leaving alone the rubber grips now on it if you just plan to shoot it.

It appears the second digit of the serial number was removed from the butt. That's the only serial number on the majority of S&W revolvers recognized by the ATF.
That's a problem...

That is correct, but I wouldn't worry too much about getting caught. I wouldn't say or do anything to draw attention to that. If you ever try to sell it through a dealer, he would probably refuse to have anything to do with it.
To me, it seems that the SN has always been that way, no obvious appearance of grinding or filing off a digit. What is most often seen on a missing butt SN is having the entire SN ground or filed off, not just a single digit.
