Default Question on K-22 Outdoorsman

UPDATE:

It appears I have found a fine example of a shooter-grade K-22 Outdoorsman thanks to the forums here! Working things out, and will update with photos when able.

You probably ought to post some pictures of the gun in question.

It can be pretty hard to tell refinishes by pictures but there tends to be "tells" if you know where to look for them.

If you look at the pin that is about at 10oclock of the grip medallion on the left side you will see that it's flush to the frame. It should be domed. An often seen tell. There are others but that pin is the first thing I check.

To my eyes, it is a pretty obvious reblue. There appears to be pretty obvious signs of heavy buffing. In addition to what has been mentioned, the address line and sideplate screws are pretty 'dished out'.

I've never seen one of those old revolvers in person. That said, the yoke screw hole is not the crisp, flat sharp edge I see on my newer revolvers, but instead looks to be a little dished in, which is evidence of buffing on a wheel rather than with a flat - IOW, a refinish.
It sure is a pretty revolver, though.

Well its worth it to choose wisely and obtain a Outdoorsman.

They are a great gun and great example of what a hand fitted gun has to offer.

I decided to buy one years ago and now have a few. Between GB and GI there always seem to be at least thirty of them out there that can help you gauge the market for asking prices and condition.

The second K-22 appears to be in original condition. It looks like a late 1930's production if the trademark stamp is a large one on the sideplate. Both guns have 1930's silver medallion grips.

Really nice K22 Outdoorsman's with matching stocks come few and far between around here. Finding a good one for under $1200 can be difficult. On the other hand, I had this one on my tables at my last show for $1000 with no takers. Atlanta shows are not much for collectable S&W's though. High edge wear from a lot of holster carry but well cared for and the checkering is in really good condition. A high functioning gun with great timing and lock up. My one problem is my FFL guy lives almost an hour from here and unless we have a show at a convenient time the drive is a real hassle. That's why I don't sell guns here. I guess I need to get a FFL holder that lives closer.

I thought I had pictures of but I did not, so I took a couple snap shots of it. SN 560506

Now that I look closer the SN is 660506.

BTW, on the first one you posted...The ejector rod looks like it never ejected a round. Another sign of a reblue.

If you want a shooter buy the first one. There are 2 refinished outdoorsmen at my local Cabelas right now. $999 each. If I wanted one to shoot and enjoy I’d buy one. Guns are not unlike cars. If they are original and high condition you don’t shoot or drive them. If you want to drive that 67 split window Corvette, you buy a restored one.

I paid just under $1500 with shipping & fees & everything a few months back. I thought it was priced on the high end, but fair. That said, I bought it because it was in terrific condition. Not something you find every day. I wanted one, so I paid up.

I could have waited and perhaps found one a little bit cheaper, but how long would that take? I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It has non-correct magnas on it, which doesn't bother me, but I am having Keith Brown make some Roper style targets for it, cause why not!

I say buy it. You could get one under $1000, but not likely in that condition.

Oh, & here is my Outdoorsman-
My new Outdoorsman

Different strokes for different folks...I shoot my Outdoorsman, that is in great condition. Although, it did alread have a turn line and ejector rod wear when I bought it. I can take it to the range and shoot it, but take care of it, then take it home and clean it up and admire it like a safe queen. Best of both worlds!

That is how I view it. My main thing is it being shooter grade because I plan to shoot it A LOT. No safe queens 👑 in my collection, if I own a gun it's getting used.

I looked for a K-22 Outdoorsman for a long time before I found one with the confluence of price and condition that met my standard. IMO, the K-22 OD is the state of the art in S&W revolvers of any era.
