Default Just a nice old 28 No Dash

Hello all, finally picked this up about about two weeks ago. Found it at a little shop near me. This store was like stepping back in time. Nothing but old firearms made with wood and steel and maybe two Glocks. I have requested a letter and will know more about it soon. It carries a s.n. of S213xxx. Love the grips it is wearing but, what is up with the non relieved targets. Those seem a little too early for this S/N. This has been a fun one to bring back to life, love it when they shine up nicer than what they left the store as.

I agree, they don't match the contour of the backstrap at all...They belong on an earlier gun - for instance, one of my Models of 1950 .44 Target......Ben

They look like K frame stocks. Nice looking 28 regardless.

Model 28 serial number S213804 was shipped in January 1962.

Aren't those K-frame grips on an N-frame gun?

Man, that's pure class.
Agree the stocks aren't right (although your tending to them sure has given nice results) - should give you some fun thinking about how to address the situation and then going on a hunt. (Me, I wouldn't bother with trying to match it for historical accuracy: that gun rolled out of the factory as a Regular Joe Shooter and that's how I'd be proud to use it - with whatever stocks made it suit my grip the best.)
Thanks so much for favoring us with the report - I'd love to see more on the gun after you've played with it more.

Thank you Erich and besides, how often does one find one with older era stocks. Lol. It seems it’s usually the other way around.

DEF - great score on your mod 28. Please post info from letter when you get it. My 4 screw 28 ser. S2023xx came to me with TT/TH and the non relieved targets also no serial number inside grips. I never lettered it so I don’t know if original. I just refinished these well worn Magnas for it.

Beautiful gun, but those do look like K-frame grips.

Here's my 28-2 wearing the K-frame grips that were on it when I got it.

And here it is with a set of Altamont grips that came on my Model 29-10.

I like it when they clean up a bit too.

I missed out on a 4 screw Model 28 recently. I had been watching it at auction but forgot to bid.

That's really, really nice. I'd shoot that thing til it got too hot to hold.

Welcome to the Forum! That's a very nice Highway Patrolman you acquired. Many of us here on the Forum are fans of the HP and Model 28s, and here is my modest collection. My favorite, of course, is my 1954 (first year and birth year) 5-screw HP, s/n S114481. HPs are built like tanks and are a blast to shoot. Enjoy!

Thanks all! Nice set of 28’s Hawg. I’m learning quite a lot here from you all. Especially the little nuances like variations of model designations ,era correct things to look for and other stuff. I’m gonna go broke here, lol.

I have but one. I was perusing the Net and came across a real nice Pre M28 5 screw with the magna stocks and 4" bbl. Just what I wanted. I got the gun and it was virtually, unfired, and won't be by me. I'm a collector. Big Larry

That's what were here for. Forum did it to me a few years ago and I'm having a blast. I like grips!

Good snag! Have a few. Old friend use to call his an ugly Mod-27.
Ugly or not, a great gun.
