Very nice! I've only seen one nickel RM in person myself, it's at Tuttle's in Enumclaw, WA. I believe a 5.5". No price tag

This gent would not quote a price either. He says there is another one same configuration that shipped on the same invoice. He wants to try and find that one and sell them as a pair. He told me he turned down $7800 for this one. I think it's worth a good bit more than that. Supposedly only 4 nickel guns in this barrel length, according to his letter.

I'm sure a real expert will come along, but the RMs with ramp front sights that I've seen, they are a lot lower than in postwar .357s. I believe the rear sight is smaller/lower than the later guns.

I remember seeing one like it that absent comrade, crsides (Charlie Sides), scoped out at a Greenville SC gun show about 6-7 years ago. I wasn’t familiar enough with them, but he said it was really rare.

It is a 4-1/2" barrel. You might be holding the one he wants to find. He told me his letter said it shipped with another of the same configuration. I kinda figured his venture was pie in the sky. This dealer happens to be in Jacksonville.

I better get in the ball and get my invoice

Our 2 revolvers are indeed a shipped pair. I spoke with the owner and he’s well familiar with Sheriff Rex Sweat and these 2 revolvers. What a small world !

Since neither of us wishes to sell at this point we have agreed to stay in touch and not make a move regarding either gun without first consulting each other

There were supposedly 144 nickel RM's made------this from Jinks' 1989 article. I say supposedly, I have no reason to doubt it.

As to nickel, 5" with Humpback hammers, 15 of them were shipped to the Indianapolis P.D. I had one of those---completely as new, inside and out---not really as new if you count the 5 little bitty well hidden stars stamped here, there, and yonder---every place it had a place-----------------------frame/cylinder/yoke/barrel/sideplate. Those guns are also listed in Jinks' article----with consecutive registration numbers. Mine was 4862 if I remember correctly.

I got struck down with a bad case of purist, and sold it.

I sure wish I hadn't done that!

That is a wonderful coincidence! I assume that the invoice confirms that one was nickel, and the other was blue ?

I bought two McGivern model 38-44's, the second one about 2 years after the first one. Turned out they were made as a pair, with sequential serial numbers, and shipped one day apart to two mid-western shooters. I wrote a story about them in the S&WCA Journal a couple of years ago, or so. Both men were students of Ed McGivern, and had received letters from McGivern advising them to check out the new McGivern model.

My letter states both shipped to Sweat in a single shipment
Ill get pictures of Reg # from both guns posted soon

I’m also embarrassed to say despite owning mine for over a year I am just now preparing to send off for invoice copies. I am doing that now.

I'll update soon as I get everything.

The front sight on both RM’s is a Baughman Quick Draw on a King Ramp base.

I dare say they wouldn't actually try to find it---but they would have it firmly imbedded in their mind. Then, one day when all the stars were properly aligned, and they stumbled across it---they POUNCED!!!!

mchom, what a gun you have! 4 1/2" barrel is pretty rare, nickel is pretty rare with LEO provenance to boot.

It's been 25-30 years since I've been to Tuttles.....

Didn't know they were still open for business, most of the old time stores in the Puget Sound area have closed over the years....

The trip there is about an hour to an hour & a half from where I'm at these days....

Maybe it's time to take a road trip... (not to buy a Reg Mag mind you)

$43 in 1938 is $952 today. A freaking steal.....

They are definitely in business. Bought an Ultra Compact Kimber there a year or so ago, smoking deal too. At the time he had 8 or so 29-2's, some nickel and all 6 1/2" available. They're probably all gone now....it's always fun to go there though!

The Nickel RMs are scarce. I like the estimate given above as I had thought the number to be about 500, or about 10% of production. The S&W RM database says only 97 with 4-1/2” barrels were produced.
Mine was shipped to Lakeland Florida of 12/10/37. Five Nickeled revolvers in a shipment of 8. It was issued to a motorcycle officer who later became the Chief of the Department and then United States Marshal for the Southern District of Florida.

He is pictured in a 1940 picture wearing the magnum sporting the pearl grips. I have a pictorial history of the man plus have talked to people the knew him.

Feel lucky to have it.

Amazing RM with awesome history!

The unusual barrel lengths interest me. Always wonder why people ordered them some random length, especially the 1/4 inch increments. I suppose if they let you order it any way you want, some people just want something a little different. Don't know if 4.5" falls in this category, but made me have the thought nonetheless.
