Default 5-Digit Chiefs Special

I recently picked up this 5-digit Chiefs Special - 35652. It's in good shape overall, with a Barami hip-grip replacing the right side grip. I am trying to determine the date of production. I have the 3rd edition of the Standard Catalog, but info is sparse on this serial number. Best I can determine is 1953 or 54. Does anyone have a more accurate date? Thanks!

Yes, probably 1953, perhaps shipped in or around September. You probably know it has the wrong left stock, too. It should have a diamond around the escutcheon.

The Mods will likely move your thread to the early revolver forum.

Thanks much. I don't know how I ended up posting it in the wrong folder, but it's been moved. I suspected the left stock was a replacement. I'll probably leave them both as is.

30 years ago I had an earlier Baby Chiefs Spl but sold it to finance "the next shiny thing". Fast forward a couple of decades and I had figured out the error of my ways and tracked down another one. This one was significantly later with ribbed ramp front sight and a serial #422XX, so it's just a little later than the OP. At first I was disappointed about the later style front sight, but to be honest, it's easier for my old eyes to pick up.

As I told you on the other forum, it is a "Baby Chiefs Special." The grips that are on it now are made for the J frame and your CS has an I-frame size grip frame which is smaller. The smaller grip frame and the rounded trigger guard are what make it a "Baby Chief." So, if you ever want to put correct grips on it, you'll need to find some some made for the I-size frame.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 4-digit smooth ramp from the first year of production. I'll have to post photos soon.

I have one of these, about 1,000 less on S/N. It was gifted to me by a close friend in 2021. The workmanship is superb on these. I hope to get a factory letter on it soon.
