Default 38 M&P Model of 1902 1st change.

Just got this model of 1902. This is my oldest S&W. Dates to 1903 - 1904.
I noticed this recess in the top strap right behind the barrel. Is this how it was made or is it erosion from years or use?

Is shaped like a fingernail ? I believe it is from the factory and is to contain the residue from the black powder excaping from the gap from between the barrel and cylinder to keep the cylinder from binding on the residue

As Truckman said, that is the "fouling cup". It is a feature of the early K-frame revolvers. I have owned a 1902 1st change since ca. 1962 and it has the fouling cup.

I thought it had something to do with black powder.
Thanks

.38 Special ammunition was originally loaded with black powder. But only for a short time before smokeless powder was used. However, black powder .38 Special was still being loaded and sold in the mid-1930s. The ballistics of both were nearly the same.
