Default what is this .44?

in the pawn shop this morning, find this .44 smith.

3 inch barrel, red insert front sight, pinned and recessed. 4 screw.

owner says it's a pre 29. s prefix, 6 digit serial number.

any idea what it is?

thanks.

It's for sure not a three inch barrel, looks like a four inch. It's in the SN range of pre-29s and appears to be in very good condition. Looks like "cokes" stocks, could confirm for sure if we saw the rest of them, and would be correct for that gun. Probably a four screw pre-29 from 1957/58. How about a picture of the other side?

How much are they asking? Is the box with it?

I have a 6.5 inch, S172898, that shipped in October of 1957. They didn't ship in order though so the one you're looking at didn't necessarily ship after mine.

You have a 44 Magnum with a 4-inch barrel that was probably shipped in 1958. Nice looking example.

You’d better go back and buy it, if the price is at all reasonable.

It is clearly a .44 Magnum model with the 4" barrel. A nearby serial number with the same configuration is S181303, which shipped on March 3, 1958. Also, S181387, with a 5" barrel, shipped on March 31, 1958.

A related fact is that S184170 is actually a Model 29 and it shipped in May, 1959.

Thanks, I did't think a red insert was correct for that time period.

No box, any ventures on what you would pay?

If the asking price did NOT make you choke or gasp. The answer to your question "what is this .44?" is ..... it's a "BUY ME NOW" .44

Red ramp and a white outline rear sight blade are standard on 44 Magnums (from their introduction in January 1956).

Those are definitely Cokes, and wearing the original finish.

I have no idea what a reasonable price would be. For me, I wouldn't buy it at 3 grand. At 2 I think I'd get it. Less than 2 and my card would be on the counter.

From what we can see you did well, very well. See if they don't have the box for it hiding there somewhere too. Having that 44 Magnum is way better than a wad of stupid money. Congrats.

I know the feeling. These guys talked me into a 629 ND that I didn't really need but it was too good of a deal to pass up.

A set sold on eBay recently, as I remember, for $850 or so.
