I was looking at a nice k frame today. No model number on the crane. What a remember about the serial number is C 39?????. I have searched the web and got my usual headache doing so. Any opinions?Asking price is $475.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably go inspect it tomorrow. Over all first impressions was good. I wanted to find the age first. I like early 50's date, I'm a 53 model. I should have paid more attention to barrel length.

Recognize that “pre-Model 10” is an unofficial collector term for those M&Ps made between roughly 1948-58, having the “high speed” action and was never used by S&W.

Here is your ballpark:

C391014 shipped June 1957
C391660 shipped August 1957
C392038 shipped July 1957
C394011 shipped June 1957

So this gun would have been at the very end of no model numbers?

Not really. Model numbers on the M&P (Model 10) don't show up until about the C430000 range, shipping in the late summer, 1958.

Moreover, there was a large number of them in the C460000 range that were not model marked and shipped in July, 1959. This was after lots of Model 10 revolvers with lower numbers (but above C430000) had shipped in the autumn of 1958 and winter of 1958-59. This provides a stark example of the fact that not only did S&W not ship in serial order, they did not assemble them in serial order either.

Great information, thank you for sharing.
