Here is what they look like on the inside. The number scratched on both inside panels do not match the revolver, but I believe they will match another revolver I received from the same person I got the 22 outdoorsman from.

Yep, I think that they're Ropers and nice ones.
The design of the Ropers is pretty distinctive, as is the small square "jig" hole on the inside.
The wood that they used usually lacks any figure or distinctive grain and the actual carving is a little coarse on the Ropers.
We all love and covet them, however, the materials and execution of the patterns is found lacking when they are compared with the work of folks like Keith Brown and a few others.

Thanks, Bob.
They currently reside on a full King Super Target conversion of a 6" Official Police. I'll take some pix and post them.

Hi bettis1,
I have been looking at the KB web site. You are so right. The work he is doing with the grips is nothing short of amazing. I will need to have a set for one of my "N" frame guns, or maybe three or four.

Very nice looking grips! KB does great work!
Here are the only Ropers I have at the moment...
These came with a Colt Trooper. I sold the gun and kept the grips. I'd like to put them on a pre-war Officer's Model Target when I find one:
Here's a pair I found on ebay a year or so ago:

Those Ropers on that Colt 45 are out of this world. Thats the first pair I have seen on a auto before. I actually had a set on another K frame S&W many years ago, but did not at the time realize what I had or what they where. I would love a set of those for my 45 Colt auto. Thanks so much for sharing. Know what I will be looking for now.

Angus, I have seriously thought of cutting my 25-5 down to five inches. The S&W name would be centered which is cool. And there you have one. Looks perfectly balanced. Who did it for you?

JayCeeNC,
Yes, they are pretty unusual & good looking!
You don't see Lighweight Commanders in 9mm too often.

Wyatt--
That .45 Colt, my friend, is a Model 26-1, which is an un-badged overrun of a commemorative made for the Georgia State Patrol a few years ago.
They made 39 of them!
The original configuration is smooth magna grips and a lanyard ring. It's basically like a 5" M27 in .45 Colt.
Very cool gun!

I am certain those are Roper stocks. I've never seen a set with finger grooves, but Roper does have an illustration of some in his book, Pistol and Revolver Shooting:

Thanks Michael Stern, The gun in the illistration does have allot in common with my grips. The finger grooves do appear simular. The person I got these revolvers from said his father had do give measurements of his hand, but was not sure if the gun had to be sent in as well. I have big hands and these grips are to small for me-darn it. But they are well crafted and beatiful works of art. If you look close you will see the two grips are different as in the location of the diamond. One diamond does not have the bottom point. I guess because these where hand made. Thank you for posting that illistration.

All this talk about Roper grips, gave me the urge to go looking for a pre-war Colt Officer's Model for the OM Ropers I have. I sold the Trooper they came with about a year ago.
Well, I found a pre-war OM at the Richmond show early Saturday morning. I really wanted a .22 to go along with my 1937 Outsdoorsman, but got this .38 Officers Model Target instead. The serial number puts it at 1937, same year as the Outsdoorsman.
Oh, one more thing... it came with its own set of Ropers!

Very nice. I like say I learn something everytime I'm on here. I had no idea Roper made sights as well. What, if any, other items did they make. Thanks to all for the post and comments.
Darn it now I am getting interested in aftermarket items, like Roper. Hate to start collecting anything else.

Kevin, actually, no I didn't !
I spent about 2 hours last night googling every type of front and rear sight I could think of. I noticed a posting with another Colt with the same sights, I figured it was some kind of off-brand.
When I just posted these pics, I noticed the previous post showing a reprint of Roper grips and the mention of self-locking micrometer sights. I was just doing a seach when I came back to get the exact name when I saw your post.
Here's some close ups of the sights:

I have a Colt OMT, 38 spl DOB 1938, with an aftermarket hammer. When I showed a pic to Joe Miller, the US Revolver Association historian and a collector of prewar Colt target revos, he told me that he thought the hammer was a Roper. He based the comment, he said, from having seen guns with similar hammers whose owners said the hammers were received from Roper. On the other hand, Kevin has researched the heck out of Roper and has yet to come across a written reference to Roper hammers.
(I think Roper hammers are extremely rare. Maybe only two exist, the one Joe saw and the one I have! I have cornered 50% of the market! )

Kevin, I really appreciate the info on the Roper sights! Thanks for taking the time to post it. All along, I thought Roper only made grips.
After reading the article, I see that the front sight has a spring inside the sight. I went and took a close looks at mine, and thankfully, it's still there. I took a pic looking down into the sight (and barrel).
Onomea, thanks for the info on "Roper" hammers. Do you have any photos that you could post?
This forum is a great source of information with very knowledgeable and helpful people!

This Officer's Model, in the foreground, has Roper sights and Sanderson stocks:
It's also got this hammer, the maker of which I don't know. Roper, maybe?
... and this trigger, also non-stock:
Kind of Frankensteinian, but wow, what an action, and what accuracy!

Here’s what Joe Miller told me in an email in January 2007: I’ve never heard of Colt doing any Target Hammers on the OMTs. I've seen a lot of King hammers and all of them have been marked King. The only other Hammers I've seen were from Roper, the same Roper that did the grips, they look real professional, something like a factory would do but they are not marked in any way. One way you may be able to tell is that all I've seen have the checkering running to a point toward the front of the hammer and the checkering is a bit coarser than the King type hammers. Does the OMT have any Roper items on it? Many times a shooter would send a gun to King or Roper for a re-work or tune up. Roper did his own type of Rear sights, Front Sights, Grips, and Hammers. I've never seen any of these items marked Roper but know for sure from owning guns that belonged to the original owners that had Roper do the work.
When I bought the OMT, it did not have the Roper stocks, but regular factory grips. Swapped for ‘em later.
Re "...but wow, what an action...," when I got this OMT, I asked Grant Cunningham, the well-known revolversmith, to go over it for me, basically just to clean and oil it. He, too, remarked that whoever did the action work sure knew what he was doing.

Onomea, thanks for posting the pics!
You can definitely see the difference in checkering pattern and the swell at the edge of the hammer.

If one studies these Ropers, he or she will see a strong similarity to the Pachmayr Presentation grip that fits so many hands well.
I'm not saying that Pachmayr copied a set of Roper grips, but the two men do seem to have had very similar ideas about comfortable, effective revolver grips.

Hope I didn't post these already here. From DC Wilson came these lefty Ropers that now reside on my Model 18. The gun seems too new for the stocks but it's the only adjustable sighted K-frame I got. Can't wait to shoot it.
You folks sure have some classic guns and grips on here. Great thread.

Hello
About Six years ago, I came acorss a K-22 Model 17-2 that had a set of Roper Stock's on it & The gun was on consignment in one of my local gun shops so I bought it to have the stocks and they now reside on my 1951 K-32. Two Years ago I came across another set of Original Roper stocks at another gun show on a Model 27-2. The vendor asked if I needed the gun and I responded with "Just The Stocks". He said that he felt the reason the gun had not sold was due to the fancy grips it had, he felt they hurt the sale of it. it was clear to me he had no earthly idea what the stocks really were, so I offered him a set of Factory target stocks in trade for them and he gladly swapped me for the second set of Roper stocks shown below on my 1935 Registered Magnum. You just never know where these Old Roper stock's will turn up and I feel very lucky to have Two pairs of them to enjoy.
Roper K-Sq stocks dated on Rear 1936
Roper N-Sq stocks on a 1935 Registered Magnum

There is an article on Roper grips and Keith Brown's grips in the March, 2011 issue of "Guns" magazine.
It is available online at- http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS0311/
Click on the March edition of "GUNS" magazine. Keith's pic is in the Table of Contents, article on page 64.
It was written by our member "SDH".

Several years ago, Ray Brazille had a Mauser Broomhandle with Roper grips. Most unusual Roper's I've ever seen.

Hello Dave
I appreciate your kind words here. The story behind how these Roper stock's came to me is rather Unique as well. The K-Frame Roper's came on a Gun shop consignment K-22 as I mentioned in my previous response & they were on a Model 17-2 revolver, which was much too early for the time span for Roper grips shown on my K-32 above. When I bought the The Model 17-2 K-22 that these Roper grips were on, the finish had been re-blued and was a Lousy Job with the S&W Trade Mark buffed almost off the gun. I had always liked the idea of having one Nickel plated so I sent it off to Ford's Refinishing in Florida as I only had $300.00 in it with the Purchase price of it having the Roper's on it in the transaction of it, I felt the revolver came to me pretty much Free. Ford's Custom gun Refinishing did a great job on it Transforming it to Nickel and re-stamped the factory trade mark for me, that had been previously destroyed. About Three years after that, I came across a Nice Outdoorsman K-22 at a gun show & I swapped the nickel K-22 off for it, without the Roper stock's on it when I traded. I discovered once I got them home that Roper had scribed a date of "1936" on the rear of these stock's so now I had a Gun from the same time period of which they were made and are shown below on it. I have since Placed them on my Pre-16 K-32 shown above as I got the Original factory serial numbered stocks that came with my 1936 K-22 Outdoorsman revolver when it shipped from the factory.
The Larger-N-frame set as I had mentioned came off a Model 27-2 revolver found at a Gun show which was blued with an 8-3/8" Barrel. The seller of that gun agreed to swap me for a set of Highly figured Walnut Factory target stocks in trade that I had with me that day. Once I Placed the Walnut Factory stock's on his 27-2 he asked me "If he owned me any Boot on the swap" ? I was very Pleased with the trade straight across the board as an even swap, so I could not take his money but I sure enjoy the Roper stock's that he called "Them There Fancy Herritts"... It just goes to show you never know what's out there if one is patient enough to look a little, and they now reside on my 1935 Registered Magnum shown above.
The Last revolver shown belongs to a friend of mine & is wearing a set of Thumb Rest Ropers like Don's gun has above. I was intrigued how Matheis Gagne Paid attention to small details in his Custom stock making & had relieved the S&W Trade Mark Portion on the revolver's frame area of this Registered Magnum so that it could be viewed with the stock's in Place. Without a Doubt, Matheis Gagne was a True Artisan and way ahead of his time. Prior to Making stock's for Walter Roper He was a Clock & Cabinet Maker and I would Love to find one of his hand made clock's to go with my stocks. Walter Roper was very articulate in his Enterprising ideas and made several Improvements to the shooting industry over the years. He came out with the Roper designed adjustable front revolver sights that we saw on Colt Revolver's and worked very close with Shooting Teams from Camp Perry back then.
Originally before he hired Matheis Gagne to make his stock's He took his Custom stock idea to S&W and wanted them to build these larger style Target stocks but they refused to make them as at that time they had service Stock's with Grip adapters and later came out with the Medium sized stock's we call Magna's. To me S&W was very Late to the Party in the making of their Factory Target stock's being in the early 1950's time span when we first started seeing them show up on K-Frame revolver's, and a Little later in the mid 1950's for the larger-N-Frame revolver's and I feel that Perhaps Matheis Gagne's Son Albert Gagne had something to do with the Birth of the S&W larger style Target stocks for the Pre-29's. Albert worked for S&W after his Father Matheis had retired and had all ready been familiar with Stock making as his Father had apprenticed him in it, and he also shot on the S&W Factory shooting Team. I base this on Purely speculation as far as him having anything to do with the Birth of the S&W target stocks but they certainly do resemble his Father's creation in some way's of The Diamond center & slight Palm swell we saw come on The Famous Coke Bottle style stocks of the Late 1950's time span when he worked there....Whether or not Albert Gagne really had anything to do with the Birth of the S&W larger style target stock's remains to be a mystery to us, but we do know that him and his Father were True artisians of wood stock's way ahead of their time and made some Gorgeous stock's that we all have learned to cherish and collect for our prized revolvers...

Congratulations to Keith and Lee on such a great article. Who would think that BS sessions at a gun show would lead to such things.
