I have a 5 inch blued model 27 ser. no. S1859XX.
On the left side of the frame below the cylinder the letters SCHD have been stamped. Does anyone know what agency these letters represent? The gun had target grips with the speedloader cutout when I bought it. Wouldn't the correct standard grips for this gun be diamond magnas? I believe the manufacture date to be around 1959. Thanks, Dean

Most M27s came with Magnas and standard hammer and trigger, up until the mid to late '70s, when the target trigger, target hammer and target grips became stanard.

South Carolina Highway Department

They marked the highway patrol guns in that fashion during that period, however the 27's were not standard issue. They were used by the patrol pistol team. Model 10 was standard issue. Before the 10's Colt Offical Police, I believe.

Has the front sight been altered on your specimen?

Joe,

Thanks for the info. The front site was apparently painted and someone removed most of the paint, I've got to get the last of it off myself. Dean
