The back strap is smooth, not relieved.
The original two-screw grips are in wonderful shape, and I want to keep them so.

Modern factory (or aftermarket) round butt J frame wrap-around grips will fit just fine for your purpose. The only difference in the I frame and J frame is the length. The grip locating pin is in the same spot. You can pick up a pair of nice smooth 'banana' style grips and they would look great. The gap at the bottom will be hidden inside the grips. I have a pair of these on one of my pre-Chief Special's.
