I just purchased a revolver of the above ilk. It has a round butt with plastic/phenolic or hard rubber grips. The serial number is 6558 and is located on the rear of the cylinder under the barrel and the bottom of the grip frame between the grips. There are 4 screws holding the cover on. The SW logo is on the cover plate and the top of each grip. The end of the ejector rod that snaps into the detent under the barrel is about 5/16" in diameter. The barrel is pinned and the location of the pin is on top. Anybody have any idea as to it's date of birth.

From the serial number it looks like a first model hand ejector made between 1896 and 1903. Is there a lug under the barrel that the end of the ejector rod snaps into when you close the cylinder? From the description and serial number it should not have one.

Yes, it does have a lug for the rod. It also has, what I believe is, a Partridge sight. A half circle that is pinned into the front sight gusset. The last patent date is 1902, inline with the bore along the top of the barrel.
Thanx for the reply by the way.

A Patridge sight would have a flat top on the front sight, and a sharp rectangular notch on the rear one.
Here's a picture of a Patridge front sight blade from Midway:
Generally the Patridge is only found on pistols with adjustable sights, probably because it's hard to machine the sharp notch out of the top rib of the frame.

Well that for sure isn't what's on the front of this gun. This one is a half circle about 1/2" diameter and .040" thick. Kinda, sorta like what the bottom of your pictured sight looks like. I have no idea as to what the hidden portion of mine looks like.
Thanx for the education. Pete C.

This picture, from another thread, is a patridge front sight blade.

A little more info on this thing.
The end of the forcing cone is tapered on the outside Where it protrudes through the frame. It appears to have been plated but 99.99% of the plating is gone. All that's left is in the cylinder hinge joint and in the tiny creases.
A little steel wool and oil has revealed a 16416 under the cylinder hinge on the frame.
It in no way shape or form looks anywheres near as nice as the above picture, But it shoots pretty good and only cost me $35.00.

If you are in Gastonia, NC , wander over to 1210 Jones St, and ask Dave Chicoine about the gun.
He will be able to answer all your questions.
Later, Mike Priwer
