i have a chance to buy a 455. the only problem i have is that the barrel is not marked 455, the barrel shows just as much ware as the frame so i don't think the barrel has been changed. does anyone know if the some or all of the mark 2's where not marked .455. thanks

All the ones I have seen are marked, however I am not an expert. It would be critical that the serial numbers match on the barrel, butt, and cylinder. A lot of these guns were modified to 45ACP or to 45LC. I looked at one this weekend at a gunshow that was marked .455 but had been converted to 45ACP. True .455 are hard to find. Hope your's is one of the unmodified ones!

Of the 15 or so I estimate I've seen, all had the same barrel markings from the factory. Lee has likely seen more 1st and 2nd Model 455's than any of us here, so perhaps he'll come by with an answer.
Is the S/N in the barrel flat?
Other ideas are 1) a contemporary re-barreling so the wear is consistent, or 2) perhaps it was converted to another caliber, besides .45acp or .45LC. I'd check the cylinder chambers and barrel dimensions carefully.

I know for a fact SN 8744 is not caliber marked. I think that most, if not all early .455 2nd's aren't caliber marked.

You are quite likely to find a 455 NOT marked with the caliber at any range in serial numbers from early till late.
Apparently, the "batch" system strikes again. Not long ago, I saw a RIGHTEOUS gun above 60,000 that was not cal marked.
The BIG question you have already been told-
DOES THE SERIAL NUMBER MATCH????????
