I once had a WW2 history book that had an interesting photo of a Brit Commando, taken in North Africa, the soldier was in a khaki uniform, shorts and a shirt with epaulets, his revolver drawn and running. I think there may have been a burning tank in the backgound. Anyone have a copy of this photo to share, perhaps others of Victory Models in use? I will add them to my collection of Victory Models and gear....
Thanks,
Canoeguy

I've seen that picture and I'm 90% sure he is carrying a Webley.

Digi,
Thats a good one! High quality pic of the ammo as well!
I'd like to get some of that ammo, is that the South African revolver and ammunition you posted before?

If the photo you mention is the one I'm thinking of, it's a British officer leading his men, and carrying an Enfield revolver.
Here's one from the Monte Cassino sector, New Zealand machine gunners armed with S&W .38-200s.

JT,
Another good one! And I just recently picked up a New Zealand marked .38/200 revolver, so that picture will fit in nicely!
Thanks,

Canoeguy,
Great thread! There's a couple more pics in Charles Pate's book, U.S. Handguns of WWII (including that New Zealand pic).
You've got a good memory! Yes, that's the same pic with the South African. The ammo box on the left is actually "Australian" from what I've read. The other's to the right.. hmmmm, I'm not sure where they're from (I think they're British issue).
They're marked identically

Revolver

Mk 2Z

In the first post, the gun the officer is carrying is indeed a No. 2 Enfield .38, but I think the guy is Australian. I saw the photo so labled, anyway.
It is a very well known photo.

OK, I'll bite.
Here is one from the archives. It depicts a US Coast Guardsman on security patrol at South Ferry, NY during WW2. He is carrying his Victory Model in the belt holster. Note the use of the lanyard to further secure the revolver.

Gunbarrell,
The guy in the top picture with the Reising, is that a sailor in dungarees?
The holster the Seargeant is wearing is pretty cool!
Speaking of "Cool", Charlie's Coast Gaurdsman looks like he is freezing!

The Sgt. in gunbarrels post looks like he is actually carrying a Colt Commando. No swivel or hole for it and the stocks look shiney like the Coltwood stocks they had on them. Just my opinion.

I think they are Victorys. I just compared a Victory 4" with a 1917 and the frames are almost the same size but the ejector rod and fitting on the barrel is identical in length. It is a little longer than 1/2 the barrel length in the .38 but less than 1/2 the barrel length in the .45. These apprear to be a little more than 1/2 the length to me. Maybe others see this one differently.

This one is from Vietnam, 1963. The Mohawk pilot with his back to the camera is my high school buddy, Lt. Ed Cribb. You'll notice the shoulder rig with the the extra rounds under his left shoulder. Undoubtedly a Victory Model.
The Mohawk had broken landing gear and veered off the runway.
As a side note, Ed was shot down by ground fire at low altitude about a month or so after this shot was taken; he was too low to eject properly, and when he hit the ground, his back broke in 3 places, killing him. He left a wife and two children, one of whom he never saw. He was on his second tour in 'Nam. To this day, I miss him greatly, and he's my personal hero.

Paladin-
There was (is) a Mohawk on display outside my training barracks at Ft. Huachuca. Thanks for sharing the photo and story.
Rest Peacefully, Lt. Crib.
